2 Punto di partenza You’ve learned how to use the passato prossimo to express past actions. Now you’ll learn another past tense, the imperfetto (imperfect).

3 The imperfetto can be translated into English in several ways.
Lia piangeva. Lia cried. Lia used to cry. Lia was crying. Facevo esercizio. I exercised. I used to exercise. I was exercising. 3

4 Uses of l’imperfetto “was/were doing” Used to do / would always
Time in past tense - Erano le otto. /Era l’una. - It was eight./ It was one. Age in past tense - Avevo cinque anni. - I was five years old.

5 So…. the imperfetto is a descriptive tense
So….. the imperfetto is a descriptive tense. Use it to describe physical and mental states in the past, including age. Rachele era contenta, ma Franco era depresso. 7 Uses of “l’imperfetto”
Weather expressions - Faceva bel tempo./ Pioveva. - It was nice out./ It was raining. Habit in the past - uses “each/ every”  “ogni” - Quando ero giovane, visitavo i nonni ogni domenica. - When I was young, I used to visit my grandparents every Sunday.

8 Uses of “l’imperfetto”
Continuous or unfinished action in the past (being general- we don’t know when the action started or ended) - I bambini giocavano a calcio. - Faceva caldo nella scuola.

9 Drop the –re and add endings:
What does it look like? Drop the –re and add endings: -vo -vi -va -vamo -vate -vano

10 The imperfetto is a simple tense; it does not require an auxiliary verb. The pattern of conjugation is identical for verbs ending in -are, -ere, and -ire. Drop the -re to form the stem and add the imperfect endings.

Reflessivi Remember reflexives? (vestirsi, svegliarsi, farsi….) Those can be put into the imperfect, too! Esempi: Mi facevo una doccia Si vestiva Ci preparavamo per uscire Si mettevano le calze

17 Words often used with imperfect
Ogni – every Sempre – always/all the time Di solito – normally il sabato / di sabato, la domenica/di domenica- every Saturday, every Sunday, etc. Mentre – while (simultaneous actions – 2 imperfect verbs going on at once) Quando – when (pass. pross. verb interrupts imperfect verb)
