2 METHODOLOGY Any translation process develops through a series of steps: Focus on the SOURCE TEXT (ST) An analysis of the function and the structure of the original text Hypothesise its perspective readership Work on the meaning of any single term and expression Concentrate one’s attention on the TARGET TEXT (TT)

3 M AINTAINING ORIGINAL TERMS IN THE ST In some cases original terms are maintained in the foreign language versions of some tourist brochures. This is often the case when food and especially prepared dishes are involved. The main ways of building shared knowledge about the term include: a) the linguistic context; b) the use of mechanical features such as parentheses together with an explicit explanation; c) the use of alternative terms to describe a dish itself.

4 P ROPER AND NON - PROPER : NAMES OF ‘ FACILITIES ’ AND PLACE NAMES In some brochures translated into Italian, name of places and facilities are sometimes left in English and sometimes translated. That depends on the level of readers’ previous existing knowledge of facilities and places. Names of places have to be signalled by capitalisation. Their translation considers more awareness on the issue.

5 PLYMOUTH Reviews on Plymouth are not always very positive with comments about the fact the it was badly bombed during WW2 and the rebuild was not always very pretty. 6 P LYMOUTH I moved to Plymouth a few years ago to buy a guest house and I think it is a lovely place and very underestimated. Quite a few of my guests are just passing through on the way to Cornwall but had not realised just what Plymouth has to offer. Alcuni anni fa mi sono trasferito a Plymouth per acquistare una pensione; credo sia un luogo piacevole ma molto sottovalutato. 7 PLYMOUTH The Barbican area is very cosmopolitan with open air cafes and bars where you can sit overlooking the harbour and yachts. You can find all sorts of different nationalities of restaurants and cobbled streets with a variety of quaint shops and galleries. Barbica è un’area multiculturale in cui si trovano bar all’aperto dove ci si può sedere per osservare il porto e gli yacht. E’ possibile trovare una gran varietà di ristoranti etnici e strade selciate caratterizzate da negozi e gallerie pittoreschi.

8 PLYTMOUTH The seafront is a lovely, wide sweeping bay fringed by greenery. The Hoe is a lovely park area a great place to picnic in the summer with Smeatons Tower (former Edison Lighthouse) and memorials, statues and gardens. Il lungomare è una bella e ampia baia circondata dalla vegetazione. L’attraente parco di Hoe è il luogo ideale per fare un picnic in estate, in cui è possibile ammirare la Torre Smeaton (ex Faro Edison), giardini, statue e monumenti commemorativi.

9 P LYMOUTH At present until late September we have our own mini version of the London Eye on the Hoe. After moving to Plymouth when my family first came down to visit me from the Midlands they were happy to see what a nice place that I had moved to and I wish more people would visit Plymouth and see for themselves what there is to offer. Da oggi fino alla fine di Settembre è possibile vedere una versione ridotta del London Eye all’interno del parco. Quando i miei genitori sono venuti per la prima volta a farmi visita, dopo il mio trasferimento a Plymouth, erano contenti del bel posto in cui mi ero stabilito. Spero che molte persone visiteranno Plymouth per vedere con i loro occhi cosa è in grado di offrire.
