8 2006/09/18ACCU Report-Anna Di Ciaccio8 of 13 CDS e Open Access (1)  Cern document server (CDS) and Open Access  CDS: Institutional Archive CERN  CERN Convention (1954), Article II, paragraph 1  “The results of CERN experimental and theoretical work shall be published or otherwise made generally available”  CDS: Best in the world, but still suffering from missing submissions  Theory: close to 100%  Experimental results: average, about 70%  Instrumentation papers: only 30%

9 2006/09/18ACCU Report-Anna Di Ciaccio9 of 13 CDS e Open Access (2)  Berlin Declaration (2003) on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities  “holders of cultural heritage to support OA by providing their resources on the Internet”  “contributions to open access infrastructure by software tool development, content provision, metadata creation, or the publication of individual articles”  CERN has organized aTask Force on OA publishing in particle physics between funding agency, authors and publishers. Written report available.

10 2006/09/18ACCU Report-Anna Di Ciaccio10 of 13 Transizione all’ Open Access  La task Force ha inviato un questionario a 40 differenti riviste scientifiche che pubblicano articoli in fisica delle particelle per chiedere se sono pronti ed accettano la transizione all’ OA.  50% delle riviste sono pronte e/o disponibili. Tra cui :  Physical Review D and Physical Review Special topics,Journal of high energy physics (JHEP),Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle physics (JCAP), Journal of Instrumentation (JINST),European Physical Journal and Societa’ Italiana di Fisica  Proposto un consorzio tra Agenzie finanziatrici, laboratori di ricerca, esperimenti piu’ grandi per finanziare e definire questo modello di pubblicazione  Periodo di transizione di 5 anni per permettere alle agenzie finanziatrici di stabilire dei budget per la sottoscrizione all’Open Access

17 2006/09/18ACCU Report-Anna Di Ciaccio17 of 13 Problema Spazio per Uffici  Indagine condotta dal Comitato (Space Policy Board) presso gli esperimenti LHC. Conclusioni:  Servono almeno altri 500 postazioni di lavoro per il 2007.  Possibili soluzioni in discussione:  Estensione Buid 40  400 nuovi posti, Costo: 9.5 MCHf;  Cambiamento interno al Buid 40 + aggiunta di 1 piano al buildings 222, 510 e 124  345 places, Costo: 4.85 MCHf

19 2006/09/18ACCU Report-Anna Di Ciaccio19 of 13 Fellows – Principles of the New Scheme 1.Split the programme into two separate sub- components (~100 position/year):  Junior fellowships (Technical Engineer/B. Sc. to M.Sc. level, up to 4 years of experience);  Senior fellowships (Ph.D. or equivalent experience, up to 10 years after M.Sc.). 2.Define fewer payment levels, linked to seniority (not age).  The current age limit for applicants (34) is removed  Changes to the benefits package, including a reduced participation to the Pension Fund, but global package remains very attractive compared to reference institutions

20 2006/09/18ACCU Report-Anna Di Ciaccio20 of 13 PDAS - New Payment Scheme  CERN shall cover PDAS expenses for staying in Geneva via a subsistence-type payment, linked to seniority (not age), regardless of the level of financial support from the home institution.  Removal, installation and home leave no longer paid.  Education fees still reimbursed, at current rates, but only for dependent children who accompany the associate for at least six months and attend educational establishments in the Geneva area.  Payment rates ensure that the attractiveness of the programme are preserved (minimum payment: 6000 CHF/month).

21 2006/09/18ACCU Report-Anna Di Ciaccio21 of 13 Buone notizie  Il nuovo Foyer e’ in fase avanzata di costruzione:  pronto in estate 2007  Nel ristorante n 1 e’ iniziata la ristrutturazione (messa a norma degli impianti e ampliamento):  fine lavori previsti per giugno 2007  Disagi:tenda provvisoria,no glass box  Macchine CERN:in via di acquisto +30 macchine ma:  Progetto di car sharing in via di definizione  Affitto delle macchine a lunga durata in discussione

22 2006/09/18ACCU Report-Anna Di Ciaccio22 of 13 Conclusioni  Il CERN e’ un laboratorio con una consistente presenza italiana  E’ importante un ruolo ‘attivo’ dei nostri rappresentanti presso l’ACCU per migliorare l’accesso alle sue strutture sopratutto con la partenza e la presa dati di LHC  Indispensabile l’input di noi utenti
