They are the photos of an unborn baby, 21 weeks old, named Samuel, who was diagnosed with spina bífida, a malformation that allows no hope of survival. Samuel’s only chance was surgery while still inside the uterus. After long research at the Medical Center of Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, Tennessee, Dr Joseph Bruner announced that he would undertake the operation on the baby, while still in his mother’s womb. During the operation the surgeon extracted the uterus by means of a normal caeserean section, and operated on Samuel through a tiny incision Dr. Bruner was finishing up the operation, which had gone well, when Samuel astonished everyone by pulling out his tiny but perfectly well-formed hand and grasping the doctor’s finger.
