Demonstrating Possession “di” & “mio, mia, mie, miei….”
There are two ways of demonstrating possession…. One method is by adding “di” in front of the owner: Questo cane e` di Maria. La classe d’italiano e` mercoledi. La ragazza di Nicola si chiama Teresa.
The other way of expressing possession is…. Created by using possessive adjectives: mio, mia, miei, mie….. There are 24 different adjectives. These adjectives must match or agree in gender and number with what is owned not the owner. Esempio: Mio padre e` simpatico.
Rules continued All nouns that indicate singular family members (like madre or padre or sorella etc.) DO NOT require an article before the adjective: Mia madre NOT La mia madre. What nouns require the articles? Plural family members (I miei genitori, or I tuoi fratelli); non-family members (amico, amici, cane, cani etc.il mio amico, I tuoi cani).
