LST Project Overview Barrel RPC’s will be replaced with Limited Streamer Tubes (LST’s)  12 Active Layers, 6 Layers of Brass Absorber  Top and Bottom Sectors in Summer ’04  Remaining 4 sectors in Summer ’05 Each Layer consists of 6 to 10 LST Modules  Each module contains of 2 or 3 “Tubes”, which are produced are Pol. Hi. Tech.  At Princeton and OSU, the tubes are glued onto a “phi- plane” to form modules  Strong QC activity in Italy and US Other key systems include  Z-planes  High Voltage, Gas  Readout Electronics

Tube Production at Pol. Hi. Tech. Production rate: 15 tubes/day. 4 BaBar shifters present doing QC  Tube Resistivity  HV conditioning, plateau test  Source scan test  Long Term Test

Tube Production Status Latest production report  1145/1350 Tubes produced  552 Tubes shipped (all tubes needed for ’04)  Production should finish May 31 Only tubes that condition OK and pass Long Term Test are paid for

PHT Status Report

Phi Plane Production Phi plane purposes  Ground plane  Transmit wire signals to forward end Manufactured at SLAC using “Large scale lamination” Production of ~700 planes now completed. Planes shipped to Princeton and OSU for module production

Module Production Tubes shipped to Princeton and also on to OSU for module production. Tubes are re-QC’d before assembly and then again after assembly. Some delay in schedule due to customs problem Now producing 20 modules/week/site Expect first ~80 modules at SLAC in two weeks All modules for ’04 installation should arrive at SLAC on June 15

Module Production QC Plateaux typically 400 Volts Source scan test re-done for every module Evidence so far is that no damage is done by trans- Atlantic shipment Good Scan “Malter” Effect

Tube/Module Production Progress 31 May # modules Needed for 2004 Tube Production at PHT Module Production at Princeton/OSU (~40/week)

Z-Plane Production Produced using similar lamination technique as for phi-planes. More challenging due to:  Large size  Soldering of strips to readout cables Z-plane production has begun (3 planes done), should finish planes for ’04 installation in mid-June Tested with production module, signals look good

High Voltage Supply High Voltage system provides a 4 wires for every tube Highest possible granularity allows minimal efficiency loss in case of mis- behaving cells Distribution boxes monitor currents for each individual tube. Powered by external HV supply

Gas Issues Gas used is Ar/Iso/CO2 mix LST performance tends to improve with higher Isobutane concentrations However, must keep gas non-flammable Important to identify non-flammable and design system so that mix stays there

Readout Electronics Signals come directly from modules on twist-n-flat cables – no preamps FEC motherboards carry 4 daughter cards for a total of 64 ch. Custom backplane and Fast Signal Distribution card Full system test at SLAC in mid-April Full set of populated cards at Ferrara this week

Readout System Test Full system test at SLAC in mid-April using:  Production LST Module  Prototype Z-plane  LST FE Card  Wire Daughter Card  Strip Daughter Card  Custom Backplane  Fast Signal Distribution Card  DAQ Test Stand (formerly used for RPC tests) Excellent S/N and readout works

Installation Issues Many Iron-work operations that have never been done before:  Corner plate removal  Solenoid support arm removal  RPC extraction Full scale mock-up in IR12 to test/practice these operations Extremely tight installation schedule for LST modules Install LST’s during day shift. Hookup and test during evening/owl shift

Installation Readiness Review (May 5, 2004) Report of the review committee William Althouse, Gordon Bowden, John Weisend, (David Nelson), Walt Innes (Chair) Executive Summary The LST group is to be commended for the tremendous amount that they have accomplished since the last review. The project as a whole appears in excellent shape and on track for the August installation. The quality of the design and production is very high and we fully expect a successful installation…In case of schedule slip, we suggest this summer’s work be completed even if it takes as much as two weeks longer than planned. The overhead of beginning and stopping an effort such as this admits no other logical choice.

Manpower INFN richiesta Installazione (3 turni, 6 giorni/settimana) 16 m.u. Elettronica di Front End (FEC + crates) 3 m.u. Software (database, DAQ) 1.5 m.u. Commissioning 2 m.u. Totale 22.5 m.u.

Conclusioni Il progetto è in schedula per l’installazione nell’estate 2004, rivelatori ed elettronica funzionano secondo le specifiche di progetto. Intenso periodo di installazione previsto per la prossima estate.
