THE HISTORY THE FOUNDATION New Orleans was founded on 1 November 1718 by the men of the company of Mississippi. It was named in honour of Philip II of Orleans, Prince de France. Just four years after its Foundation, New Orleans became the capital of French Louisiana, replacing Biloxi.

SPANISH RULE With the Treaty of Paris in 1763, Spain, who had ceded Florida to Great Britain, he received the Louisiana. In 1788 and in December 1794, New Orleans was destroyed by two major fires. In 1800, with the signing of the Treaty of San Ildefonso, France came into possession of New Orleans, although in 1803 was sold to the United States.

THE 800 In 1815 in New Orleans was fought a battle between the British and Americans, known to history as the battle unnecessary because at the time of the crash had already been signed the armistice between the two countries. Its port quickly became one of the most important in the South, thanks to the African slave trade, which here as in any other American port arrived in large numbers.

THE 900 Until 1860 the city was the fifth largest in the United States and in the decades that followed continued relatively to grow. However, with the growth before the industrial centres of the Midwest, then with an unexpected birth Californian metropolis and the Pacific coast, New Orleans began to lose more and more positions in the ranking of American cities. As of the Census of 1950, 68,1% of the population was white, while 31.9% African American.
