Una di queste fu pubblicata in prima pagina dal New York Times come evento eccezionale e il relativo articolo definì questa storia come un bellísimo inno alla Vita. These photographs have been around since November 2002. They were called “the pictures of the year”. The event they show is so exceptional that the New York Times published it on its front page. 2 They are the photos of an unborn baby, 21 weeks old, named Samuel, who was diagnosed with spina bífida, a malformation that allows no hope of survival. Samuel’s only chance was surgery while still inside the uterus. After long research at the Medical Center of Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, Tennessee, Dr Joseph Bruner announced that he would undertake the operation on the baby, while still in his mother’s womb. 3 During the operation the surgeon extracted the uterus by means of a normal caeserean section, and operated on Samuel through a tiny incision Dr. Bruner was finishing up the operation, which had gone well, when Samuel astonished everyone by pulling out his tiny but perfectly well-formed hand and grasping the doctor’s finger. Durante l’intervento il chirurgo fece un normale taglio cesareo, estrasse l’utero e vi praticò una piccola incisione attraverso la quale operare il piccolo Samuel. 5 Il prestigioso chirurgo disse di aver vissuto il momento più emozionante della sua vita, quando la manina di Samuel prese il suo dito quasi per ringraziarlo del dono della vita che gli aveva fatto. Egli rimase impietrito per alcuni secondi, durante i quali Samuel continuava a tenergli il dito, dando così la possibilità all’équipe di scattare le fotografie. This prestigious surgeon said it was the most emotion-charged moment of his entire life when Samuel’s tiny hand grasped his finger, as if to thank him for giving him the gift of life.
