Shared Resources Manager for Environmental Data Analysis and Applications (GRIDA3) A three-year project with CRS4 (coordinator), NICE srl and University of Cagliari (CINSA, DIGITA, DISTER, DIT) GRIDA3 is an interdisciplinary project recently funded by the Italian Research Ministry (Progn. 1433/2006 MIUR FAR D.Lvo 297/99) and the Sardinian Regional Authorities. Land monitoring, managing and planning are today being configured through networks of interests which, for instance, classify the territory in homogeneous ambits, collect geographic and non-geographic data, distribute certified data and edit predictions and analyses. Autonomous functional centers, nodes of the network, sometimes belonging to different agencies, administrate computing services and large-scale acquisition systems, maintain the knowledge of the territory, archive environmental and anthropic data, run application software, forecast events and operate decision support systems. As a matter of fact, the grand challenges of environmental sciences require computing power, sensing devices and storage capacity that hardly a single organization, public or private, might acquire. Designed to provide a holistic description of environmental problems and practical answers to questions of central importance, GRIDA3 will result in an advanced problem-solving tool for the integration -through a computing portal- of human know-how, simulation software, instrumentation and resources for data communication, storage, visualization, and computation. The project will supply a Grid infrastructure for collaborative work, built for the sharing of data and applications located at multiple sites across federated domains in Sardinia, public and private.
