2 The imperative form of verbs is used to give order, suggestions, directions, and instructions. The informal imperative – the tu, noi, and voi forms of verbs – is used when talking to friends and family members.

4  Note that the forms of the informal imperative of –ere and –ire verbs are identical to those of the present indicative tense. The tu form of verbs that end in –are differs from the present indicative tense; it is formed by dropping the –re from the infinitive. Offri del caffè agli amici! Offer some coffee to your friends! Assaggia l’arrosto! Taste the roast!

5  The negative imperative of the tu form of verbs consists of non + the infinitive. The negative imperative of the noi and voi forms of verbs is formed by adding non in front of the affirmative forms. 6  For recipes and other directions, you can use the voi form of the imperative or the infinitive. Aggiungere (aggiungete) del parmigiano grattugiato. Add some grated Parmesan cheese.  Most verbs that are irregular in the present indicative have the same irregular forms in the imperative. Vieni con me! Come with me! A Capodanno non bevete troppo! On New Year’s Eve, don’t drink too much!

7  The following irregular verbs have imperative tu forms that differ from the indicative. The noi and voi forms are the same as those of the present indicative.
