1 Quando ebbe congedato le folle, salì sul monte, in disparte, per pregare. Fattasi notte, era là solo, mentre la barca si trovava lontano da terra molti stadi, sbattuta dai flutti; c'era infatti vento contrario. (Mt 14, 23-24) And having sent the people away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. At nightfall, he was there alone. Meanwhile, the boat was very far from land, dangerously rocked by the waves for the wind was against it. (Mt 14, 23-24)

2 Alla quarta vigilia della notte venne Gesù verso di loro camminando sul mare. I discepoli, vedendolo camminare sul mare, furono presi da spavento, pensando che si trattasse di un fantasma, e per paura si misero a gridare.(Mt 14, 25-26) At daybreak, Jesus came to them walking on the lake. When they saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, thinking that it was a ghost. And they cried out in fear. (Mt 14, 25-26)

3 Ma subito Gesù parlò loro dicendo: «Fatevi animo, sono io; non temete!». Allora Pietro lo pregò dicendo: «Signore, se sei tu, comanda che anch'io venga da te sull'acqua». Ed egli: «Vieni!».Allora Pietro scese dalla barca e si mise a camminare sull'acqua andando verso Gesù. (Mt 14, 27-29) But at once Jesus said to them, "Courage! Don't be afraid. It's me!" Peter answered, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you walking on the water." Jesus said to him, "Come." And Peter got out of the boat, walking on the water to go to Jesus. (Mt 14, 27-29)

4 Ma vedendo che il vento soffiava forte, fu preso dalla paura e, poiché cominciava ad andar giù, gridò dicendo: «Signore, salvami!». Subito Gesù stese la mano, lo afferrò e gli disse: «Uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?». (Mt 14, 30-31) But, in face of the strong wind, he was afraid and began to sink. So he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Jesus immediately stretched out his hand and took hold of him, saying, "Man of little faith, why did you doubt?" ( Mt 14, 30-31)

6 In quel tempo si avvicinarono a Gesù i discepoli per dirgli: «Chi è dunque il più grande nel regno dei cieli?». Egli, chiamato a sé un fanciullo, lo pose in mezzo a loro e disse: «In verità vi dico: se non vi convertirete e non diventerete come i fanciulli, non entrerete nel regno dei cieli. (Mt 18,1-3) At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked him, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" Then Jesus called a little child, set the child in the midst of the disciples, and said, "I assure you that unless you change and become like little children, you cannot enter the kingdom of Jesus heaven. 7 Chi dunque si farà piccolo come questo fanciullo, questi sarà il più grande nel regno dei cieli. Se uno accoglie un solo fanciullo come questo nel mio nome, accoglie me». (Mt 18, 4-5) Whoever becomes lowly like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, and whoever receives such a child in my name receives me.(Mt 18, 4-5)

8 «Ma se uno sarà di scandalo a uno di questi piccoli che credono in me, è meglio per lui che gli sia legata al collo una mola asinaria e sia precipitato nel fondo del mare.(Mt 18, 6) If any of you should cause one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble and fall, it would be better for you to be thrown into the depths of the sea with a great millstone around your neck.(Mt 18,6)
