2 L’aggettivo: Adjectives, describe people, places, and things. In Italian, adjectives agree in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural) with the nouns they describe. There are three types of adjectives in Italian: those that end in -o (americano, alto, biondo), those that end in -e (francese, giovane, triste), and those that end in -ista (ottimista, pessimista, materialista).

3 Adjectives that end in -o
Singolare Plurale Maschile o i un ragazzo biond-o due ragazzi biond-i Feminile a e una ragazza biond-a due ragazze biond-e Paolo è alto e biondo. Maria invece è bassa e bionda. Hanno i capelli corti e ricci. Carla e Giulia sono Italiane.

4 Adjectives that end in -e
Singolare Plurale Maschile e i un ragazzo trist-e due ragazzi trist-i Feminile e i una ragazza trist-e due ragazze trist-e Carlo e Renata sono molto intelligenti. Martina e Luisa sono intelligenti.

5 Adjectives that end in -ista
Singolare Plurale Maschile ista isti un ragazzo ottim-ista due ragazzi ottim-isti Feminile ista iste una ragazza ottim-ista due ragazze ottim-iste Marco è pessimista, ma Giovanna è ottimista. Giulio e Anna sono materialisti!

6 More rules to help you use adjectives:
When an adjective modifies two or more nouns of different genders, the masculine plural form of the adjectives is always used. Mario e Luisa sono biondi. Gli studenti sono seri.

7 Like nouns ending in-ca, -ga, and -go, adjectives in the plural change to -che, -ghe, and -ghi. In order to maintain the hard sound of c and g. Le tue amiche sono simpatiche. Laura ha i capelli lunghi.

8 Most adjectives usually follow the noun they modify, but there are some some exceptions. The following adjectives very often precede the noun they modify. Bello/a Giovane Bravo/a Grande Brutto/a Nuovo/a Buono/a Piccolo/a Caro/a Vecchio/a Cattivo/a Vero/a È un giovane studente italiano. È una vera amica.
