For the purpose of this definition «industrial monument» should be interpreted very widely to include all sorts of relics of industrial processes and industrialization: it would take in, for example, the homes, public houses, and churches of industrial workers. «Industrial monuments» may be of any date, although the implication of «monument» is that they are obsolete or on the point of becoming obsolete. A Neolithic flint mine or a Medioeval harbour come within of this terms of reference, although they are normally covered by more conventional archaeology.

3 Industrial archeology was born in Great Britain and then rapidly spread to the United States since the early 1970s. It is based on the observation of various materials useful for the reconstruction of industrial history: advertising materials, patents, industrial sites. In the case of Italy, agricultural businesses and hence the surrounding area are also important productive testimonies. And there are still territories linked to the same production for more than a millennium.
