2 Definizione Il congiuntivo in inglese si usa per esprimere importanza e urgenza oltre a opinione, dubbio, desiderio, augurio, suggerimenti. Il tempo è quasi sempre un semplice tempo presente, passato, futuro o anche infinito. Inoltre si può usare should + infinito senza to.

3 Come si forma Si può anche usare la forma continuous o passiva:
AFFERMATIVA: forma base del verbo (infinito senza to) I insist you come with me. NEGATIVA: Not + forma base del verbo I prefer you not tell him about my disease. Si può anche usare la forma continuous o passiva: It is essential that you be standing at your desks when the teacher enter. We suggested that you be allowed to go to the camp.

4 Quando si usa -1 She recommended (that) we visit the Uffizi Gallery.
to advise (that) to ask(that) to command(that) to demand(that) to desire(that) to insist(that) to prefer(that) to propose(that) to recommend(that) to request(that) to suggest(that) to urge(that) Dopo verbi quali: Nel caso questi verbi siano seguiti da that la frase risulta molto più formale. She recommended (that) we visit the Uffizi Gallery.

5 Quando si usa -2 It is important she attend the meeting.
Dopo le seguenti espressioni: It is best (that) It is crucial (that) It is desirable (that) It is essential (that) It is imperative (that) It is important (that) It is recommended (that) It is urgent (that) It is vital (that) It is a good/bad idea (that) It is important she attend the meeting.

7 Quando si usa -3 Esempi I think you are a liar.
Credo che tu sia un bugiardo. I think you are a liar. (2) Se fossi in te, lo perdonerei. If I were* you I would forgive him. * Da notare che quando il congiuntivo imperfetto del verbo to be segue if, viene utilizzata per tutte le persone la forma were. (3) Credo che siano andati al cinema assieme. I think they have gone to the cinema together. (4) Se ti avessi visto ti avrei salutato. If I had seen you I would have said hello to you.

8 Quando si usa -4 Il congiuntivo è usato in alcuni ambiti linguistici come quello legale o in situazioni molto formali: It is essential that the documents reach the office on time.

9 Per esercitarsi Completare le frasi con l’espressione o verbo corretto. It is crucial that you……….on time for the meeting. (be) The teacher insisted that Mary………..more. (study) It is essential that she………….the medicine every day. (take) It is a good idea the teacher…….extra notes to study. (give) It is best she……..a rest she looks tired.
