CSN1, 14 maggio 2007 Calorimetria EM a LAr di ATLAS 2 Detector Status Barrel: Cold and filled with Lar. In stable conditions since June 06 Endcap A (ECA): Cold and filled with Lar. In stable conditions since mid March 07 Endcap C (ECC): Cool down started on March 22 and should be finished by the beginning of June He contact gas, circulation of gaseous N2 in heat exchangers He contact gas, circulation of liquid N2 in heat exchangers Purging of He gas, introduction of Ar gas in cold tank Last part of cool down: Ar contact gas, liquid N2 circulating in heat exchangers

CSN1, 14 maggio 2007 Calorimetria EM a LAr di ATLAS 3 Detector Status Lots of debugging going on on the systems: Noise studies, electronic calibration, signal reconstruction,… Cosmic runs with Tile trigger: Barrel: first data taking period in August 06 and October 06. Now systematically (~every weekend) since March 07 ECA: taking combined data (ECA+Barrel+Tile) since Easter Cosmic run is being proving a great opportunity to drive developments in DCS, DAQ, Monitoring, Reconstruction, Electronics Calibration, conditions DB,… Strong Milano involvement on HV activity and especially on DCS software

CSN1, 14 maggio 2007 Calorimetria EM a LAr di ATLAS 6 HV DCS Barrel and Presampler calorimeters HV DCS are partly integrated into the ATLAS DCS: Full integration expected before M3 week (June 4-18) Complete barrel integration and then move to endcap calorimeters: FSM: barrel only so far Condition DB: barrel only so far Configuration DB: to be done Alerts: to be done

CSN1, 14 maggio 2007 Calorimetria EM a LAr di ATLAS 7 HV status Due to limited availability of HV power supplies only a subset of the detector can be powered Barrel: Barrel EM: 1.6 kV on 12/32 modules (cosmic set-up) since begin of March 07 Barrel Presampler: 2000 V on 32/64 modules Endcap A: EM: At nominal voltage since end of April Hadronic: At nominal voltage since beginning of April. Temporarily OFF to debug HV/LV interlock for safety of HEC preamps Forward: At nominal voltage since beginning of April Endcap C: EM: Partial 50 V during cool down

CSN1, 14 maggio 2007 Calorimetria EM a LAr di ATLAS 8 HV status Two old problems: 1. Failures of Iseg HV modules 2. Shorts in some calorimeter sectors 1. Failures of Iseg modules: Solved. The problem has been identified and Iseg is retrofitting all modules bought by the Collaboration (136/151) Retrofitting: 75% done (of 114 which need retrofitting). Should be finished by Mid June. 40 “new generation” modules ordered: 15 to complete set-up (end August) + spares (end 2007-beginning 2008). Prototypes being delivered: to be tested at CERN, Dresden and Milano before starting production Retrofitted modules are continuously ON since beginning March (April) for Barrel (ECA) cosmic runs with good performance
9
CSN1, 14 maggio 2007 Calorimetria EM a LAr di ATLAS 9 HV status 2. Shorts in the calorimeter: Since the first cold tests in B180, some HV sectors have been found in short Two approaches to cure the shorts (Barrel EM, Barrel PS, EM Endcap): “short burning”: send a fast large spike in the faulty HV line to burn the resistive impurity causing the short cut “hospitalization” (if the above fails): since the “short” has usually a resistance in the ~1 Mregion (few hundreds k in worst cases), the affected channel can be put on special high current modules where they can operated drawing currents (up to 3 mA) at reduced voltage (if needed)
10
CSN1, 14 maggio 2007 Calorimetria EM a LAr di ATLAS 10 Shorts in calorimeter Barrel Presampler: All channel OK at nominal voltage after “burning” procedure Barrel EM: Burning tried beginning of July: unsuccessfull 23/896 lines on high current modules 12/23 lines operated drawing current at nominal or reduced voltage since beginning of March (cosmic set-up) Affected sectors can be operated successfully, currents are pretty stable Endcap EM A: 27 lines in shorts during first ramp up after cool down Short burning: 16/27 lines cured Remaining 11 lines will be put on high current modules (modules ordered) All the other lines OK at nominal voltages

CSN1, 14 maggio 2007 Calorimetria EM a LAr di ATLAS 12 LV Power Supplies 58 (Barrel+Endcaps) DC-DC converters located on the cryostats: 280 V DC input, 4.5 kW per box, rad tol Several problems found during production: Weak design and construction, thermal problems, deterioration of components Only 12 PS available for cosmic run so far After a deep re-evaluation of the design the Collaboration decided to retrofit all 68 units: Each unit has 27 module: 20 components/module to be replaced Job assigned to ALGEN Design Services Inc
13
CSN1, 14 maggio 2007 Calorimetria EM a LAr di ATLAS 13 LV PS After an initial delay, retrofitting is now well on going and retrofitted modules are getting at CERN: 23 done, 16 already at CERN (2 on Barrel replacing old ones, 7 on ECA) OK so far: 2 PS ON for about 2 weeks Retrofitting will be completed by late July However it is only a temporary solution (2 yrs): Because of time and component availability not all desidered changed could be integrated Two new companies identified to start a new design/prototyping phases: Wiener Algen+AEI Decision for production will be taken after the prototype phase
14
CSN1, 14 maggio 2007 Calorimetria EM a LAr di ATLAS 14 SW activities Calibration activities: Calibration of photons and electrons “Calibration hits” methods, will be available in release 13 Work on going to demonstrate if it can also be used in Etmiss calibration Etmiss calibration: Overall performance (CSC note: D. L’incremento nel 2007 rispetto al 2006, risente del rimborso di 350 KCHF per “spares “ (elettronica di FE), gia’ da tempo programmato.
