Grammar of piacere The verb piacere is used to express like and dislike. Literally, piacere does not mean “to like.” The literal meaning is “to be pleasing to.” Esempio: Mi piace il gelato. Ice cream is pleasing to me. Indirect Objects Piacere is always used with an indirect object. This is to say that something (the subject) is pleasing to somebody (an indirect object). The indirect object can be written in two different ways, today we are focusing on using the pronoun (mi, ti, gli, le ect.). Example: Gli piace dormire.* To him, to sleep is pleasing. Present tense, singluar and plural The present tense singular is piace. The present tense plural is piacciono. Remember that whatever is pleasing is the subject of piacere. The subject determines whether the verb is singular or plural. Example: Ti piace questo libro. We like this book. Mi piacciono questi libri. I like these books. *Underline the subject!. The negative In the case of an indirect object pronoun, sentences are made negative by adding “non” before the indirect object pronoun: Non mi piace il gelato. Non ti piace ballare?
