2 What is Passato Prossimo? Passato Prossimo is a compound verb tense. This means that it is made up of two parts; the present tense conjugation of the helping verb, and the past participle of the main verb. In Italian, the helping verb that is most commonly used is AVERE.

3 What is a past participle? The past participle of regular verbs in Italian are formed as seen below: Step 1: Remove the last three letters of the infinitive, to get the stem. Parlare – are = ParlVendere – ere = Vend Capire – ire = Cap

4 What is a past participle? Step 2: add the correct ending to the stem. Parl + ato = ParlatoVend + uto = Venduto Cap + ito = Capito

5 How to use Avere with the Past Participle Verbs which take a form of AVERE are considered transitive; this means that there is also a direct object in the sentence. For example: Loro hanno mangiato una pizza. subject direct object AVERE + past participle
