At a societal level and within our own organizations, we face a growing realization that our physical and IT assets, systems, and infrastructure are reaching a breaking point. As the pace of business and the world continues to accelerate, the physical and digital foundations on which progress depends are straining to keep up. The explosion of data, transactions, and digitally-aware devices is straining IT infrastructure and operations. Exponential growth in communications subscribers and services is exposing limitations in bandwidth and storage capacity. Supply inefficiencies as well as demand spikes put pressure on energy and utility systems. Clogged and congested roadways impact human productivity. And networks, supply chains, and borders face a proliferation of new risks and threats. Transitional Line: With customer and competitive pressures only increasing, it is clear that we need to address the deficiencies in infrastructure that threaten to hold us back – both at an organizational and at a societal level. Supporting stats: An estimated 2 billion people will be on the Web by 2011 Worldwide mobile telephone subscriptions reached 3.3 billion in 2007 – one for every two people on the planet At the same time, we are heading toward one trillion connected objects – comprising “the Internet of things” Hundreds of satellites are in orbit – generating terabytes of data every day By 2010 there may be 30 billion Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags produced globally, embedded in products, passports, buildings – even animals By 2010 there will be 1 billion transistors per human SOURCES: Smart Objects: IBM Global Technology Outlook 2005 ; Cellular: GSM Association Fact Sheet 2007 Cyber Attacks: US Department of Homeland Security Contemporaneamente, le aspettative e la pressione competitiva stanno aumentando 2 Shearer SLM.ppt

70% in media viene speso per gestire l’infrastruttura IT esistente, a scapito dell’innovazione The facts here are startling – inefficiency is prolific – clearly, progress is needed: - In distributed computing environments, up to 85% of computing capacity sits idle. Consumer product and retail industries lose about $40 billion annually, or 3.5 percent of their sales, due to supply chain inefficiencies. 70% on average is spent on maintaining current IT infrastructures versus adding new capabilities. Explosion of information: 54% growth in storage shipments every year 33% of consumers notified of a security breach will terminate their relationship with the company they perceive as responsible. Transition Line: And yet for some of our clients – they are already seeing benefits derived from their own transformation- . 1.5x 50¢ per 1€ L’esplosione delle informazioni guida il 54% di crescita annua sulle necessità storage.

The first picture shows a typical data center. Many different servers, operating systems and processor types, each with their own unique tools for management. External SAN and LAN switching with tons of bulky and/or costly cables—all costing U space in the rack, drawing power and slowing your time to production. BladeCenter consolidates all of this into a single high-availability solution with common management—no matter what processor or operating system you need to run your applications. We also built switching for data and storage right into the chassis helping to reduce clutter, save cost and speed deployment. We reduced the number of power supplies and PDU cables. We completely cut out the cost of KVM switching with the AMM, and we drove down power consumption, heat output and floor space. It's a simply smarter way to gain control. Shearer SLM.ppt

3/27/ :03 AM La ricerca IBM ha realizzato server e storage “green” IBM System z10 EC IBM System x3950-M2 IBM POWER Systems IBM BladeCenter IBM iDataPlex IBM System Storage We have made the investments to design energy efficiency into our products and achieve leadership from x86 up to the mainframe. System x enterprise servers with eX4 technology provide up to 96-core scalability, enhancing utilization and lowering energy usage per OS image with a platform capable of the maximum consolidation capability of VMware. The PowerVM, JS12/JS22, Power 520/550 Express, Power 570/575/595 enables new ways for consolidation of under-utilized servers. POWER6 EnergyScale™ technology enables dynamic power saving and management for the first time. A customer can consolidate up to 180 non-virtualized Sun Fire V490 Servers into one rack of Virtualized IBM BladeCenter JS22 servers and save up to 92% energy usage. IBM BladeCenter announced the new IBM BladeCenter JS12 (4/2) and IBM BladeCenter HS12 (4/8) – these new single-socket blades require lower power and cooling. IBM’s ability to utilize less power allows customers to do more with less and/or include more processing capability in their datacenter’s power envelope than any other blade offering on the market today. A new category of servers, IBM iDataPlex is a flexible, massive scale-out green data center for LE customers looking for compute density and energy efficiency. Using an expanded version of IBM Rear Door Heat Exchanger the iDataPlex is a totally enclosed environment that removes 100% of the rack heat load and is acoustically quiet. An example of leadership on the System Storage side is SAN Volume Controller, thin provisioning and flash copy to store data more efficiently. Also, Virtual Disk Mirroring to improve availability and resilience. TS7530 Tape Virtualization solution has new capacity configuration options (e.g. 1TB drive and RAID6 support) and enhanced hardware compression to improve energy efficiency. Utilizing these new storage offerings customers can reduce overall storage energy requirements by using techniques such as blending the use of disk and tape to optimize efficiency against performance (case studies show that an environment that appropriately blends in the use of tape for archiving and retention can reduce storage energy costs by as much as 10X) Oltre l’80% di risparmio energetico rispetto a soluzioni Linux concorrenti Scalabilità a 96-core, consumando fino al 67% in meno di concorrenti equivalenti Taglia i costi energetici fino al 65% in progetti di virtualizzazione e consolidamento da altre piattaforme UNIX Usa fino al 25% meno energia di soluzioni blade concorrenti Taglia I costi energetici del 40% in confronto a equivalente capacità di calcolo in rack standard TS7530 Tape e SAN Volume Controller e virtual disk.

Cloud Computing, IBM Power Systems & SAP
Micro-Partitioning Support: Micro-Partitioning™ technology helps lower costs by allowing the system to be finely tuned to consolidate multiple independent workloads. Micro-partitions can be defined as small as 1/10th of a processor and be changed in increments as small as 1/100th of a processor. Up to 10 micro-partitions may be created per core. Integrated Virtualization Manager: Manage your virtualized environment with the click of a button. The Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) literally allows you to point, click and consolidate workloads with its easy to use browser-based interface. Virtual I/O Server: Save money by sharing I/O resources. The Virtual I/O Server is a special-purpose partition which provides virtual I/O resources to client partitions. The Virtual I/O Server owns the resources that are shared with clients. A physical adapter assigned to a partition can be shared by one or more other partitions. The Virtual I/O Server is designed to reduce costs by eliminating the need for dedicated network adapters, disk adapters and disk drives. PowerVM Lx86: Run x86 Linux® applications on POWER™. This feature enables the dynamic execution of x86 Linux instructions by mapping them to instructions on a POWER processor-based system and caching the mapped instructions to optimize performance. PowerVM Lx86 software is designed with features that enable users to easily install and run a wide range of x86 Linux applications on Power™ Systems platforms with a Linux on POWER operating system. Shared Dedicated Capacity: The benefits of dedicated resources without the waste. This feature allows for the "donation" of spare CPU cycles for dedicated processor partitions to be utilized by the shared pool, thus increasing overall system performance. The dedicated partition maintains absolute priority for dedicated CPU cycles, and sharing will only occur when the dedicated partition has not consumed all its resources. This feature is supported on POWER6 processor-based servers. Multiple Shared Processor Pools: Let the system do the administration for you. Simply assign priorities to partitions and let the Hypervisor allocate processing power as needed by your applications. This feature allows for automatic non-disruptive balancing of processing power between partitions assigned to shared pools resulting in increased throughput and the potential to reduce processor-based software licensing costs. This feature is supported on POWER6 processor-based servers. Live Partition Mobility: Move a running AIX or Linux partition from one physical Power Systems POWER6 processor-based server to another Power Systems POWER6 processor-based server without application downtime, helping clients to avoid application interruption for planned system maintenance, provisioning, and workload management. This feature is supported on POWER6 processor-based servers. Shearer SLM.ppt
