3 Il Congiuntivo The indicative expresses certainty and reality in the present, past, and future. The congiuntivo (subjunctive) expresses uncertainty, possibility, subjectivity, or feelings about events described. Indicativo o Congiuntivo? Temo che loro… 5. Sono sicura che… È vero che… 6. Non vogliono che tu… Non pare che lui… 7. Speri che io… So che… È chiaro che voi…

4 Il Congiuntivo Presente
The present subjunctive is used in dependent clauses to describe present and future events and circumstances. Ex: I think that today in Italy there are many people from non-EU countries. Ex: I doubt that the laws will change in the future. Verb conjugation in textbook p. 165

5 Uses of the congiuntivo
Primarily with dependent clauses introduced by che. Verbs of emotion, opinion, desire, hope or belief take the subjunctive in dependent clauses. Vogliamo che loro lo facciano. Mi dispiace che loro non vengano. Impersonal expressions showing necessity, doubt, probability, possibility or emotion take the subjunctive in dependent clauses. Non sembra che loro siano clandestini. È strano che loro non parlino italiano.

6 Uses of the Congiuntivo
There must be a change in subject. Ex: Io voglio che tu faccia i compiti. – I want you to do your homework. (Translation is equivalent to an English infinitive.) Ex: Loro pensano che la bistecca sia stracotta. – They think that the steak is overcooked. If there is no change in subject, use the infinitive. Ex: Io penso di essere molto intelligente. – NOT – Io penso che io sia intelligente. If there is no clear subject, use the infinitive. Ex: È importante che voi impariate una lingua straniera vs. È importante imparare una lingua straniera.

7 Big Idea Congiuntivo expresses uncertainty, possibility, subjectivity, feeling about events described, opinions, etc. There must be a change in subject!
