2 Il gerundio 1. Uscendo dal concerto, ho visto il famoso baritono Pernacchia. 2. Mi sono rotto il piede correndo. 3. Mangiando l'insalata, la zia Casimira ha trovato un grosso insetto nero. 4. Saverio si e` tagliato il collo facendosi la barba.

3 Il gerundio 5. Le ha sorriso avendola vista. 6. Essendo stata a Napoli, Edna ha deciso di imparare l'italiano. 7. Parlandogliene, ho capito che capiva quello che dicevo. 8. Ho salutato la cantante avendola conosciuta durante la festa.

4 Il gerundio Italian gerund = -ing form of the verb which in English can be preceded by when, while, by. It expresses an action which takes place at the same time as that of the main verb (1, 2, 3, 4, 7). The subject of the Italian gerund and the main verb is the same.

5 Il gerundio The compound gerund in Italian (5, 6, 8) expresses an action that occurred before that of the main verb. If the verb is conjugated with essere, the past participle agrees with the subject: Essendo arrivati, i ragazzi hanno cominciato a cantare.

6 Il gerundio If the verb is conjugated with avere, the past participle agrees with a preceding 3rd person direct object pronoun: Ho visto dei begli stivali. Avendoli comprati, me li sono messi subito.

7 Il gerundio Formation: -are verbs: parlando, andando -ere, -ire verbs: leggendo, finendo fare, bere, and dire use the Latin root: facendo, bevendo, dicendo

8 Il gerundio Position of pronouns: pronouns are attached to the gerund: Guardandola, mi sono innamorato a prima vista. With the compound gerund, the pronouns are attached to the auxiliary verb (the gerund form). Essendoci divertiti al concerto, siamo tornati a casa.

9 Il gerundio When the -ing form of the verb in English is a subject or an object, Italian uses the infinitive: I like running. Mi piace correre. Playing soccer is fun. Giocare a calcio e` divertente. Eating at a restaurant every evening can be expensive. Mangiare al ristorante ogni sera puo` essere caro.

10 Il gerundio 1. Cosa stai facendo? 2. Stavo leggendo quando ho sentito il telefono. 3. "Dov'e` il dottor Sparaposa?" "Stara` andando in ufficio."

11 Il gerundio stare + gerundio: may be used for simple tenses (present, future, imperfect) to emphasize an action in progress. Sto mangiando. Mario stava andando all'ospedale.

12 Usa il gerundio: 1. Mentre cantava, il chitarrista saltava energicamente. 2. Quando ammirava il ritratto, la signorina Grattacapo pensava al suo fidanzato. 3. Mentre gridavamo appassionatamente, applaudivamo il baritono.

13 Usa il gerundio: 4. Quando ho sete, bevo una limonata. 5. Mentre sorrideva serenamente, la zia Pinuccia sembrava un orso. 6. Quando pensiamo a te, scriviamo una canzone. 7. Mentre faceva il conto, il cameriere aumentava i prezzi.

14 Usa il gerundio: 8. Mentre suonavi il sassofono, fumavi una sigaretta. 9. Quando facevo l'assolo alla batteria, mi sono tagliato la mano. 10. Quando saliva sul palcoscenico, il soprano rideva ripetutamente.
