Storia e struttura: History and structure: La villa, strutturata su più piani, si trova poco fuori dalle mura cittadine. Inizialmente proprietà del ricco mercante Agostino Chigi, venne poi acquistata dai Farnese, famiglia dalla quale prese il nome. The villa, structured on some floors, is out of the city’s wall. At the start it was a property the rich merchant Agostino Chigi, later the Farnese’s family bought the house. From this family the villa took the name.

La forma della casa è, per così dire, «a ferro di cavallo». Questa forma era stata concepita per creare uno spazio adibito a rappresentazioni teatrali da vedere in giardino. Dovendo essere questa una residenza estiva, inizialmente le logge a pian terreno erano dei porticati che affacciavano sul giardino, solo successivamente vennero chiusi. The house is like a horseshoe because into the garden Agostino Chigi used to watch some dramas. This villa was a place used during the summer, for this the Loggias on the first floor were opened, but later they have been closed.

La costruzione avvenne tra il 1506 e il 1512, sotto la cura dell’architetto Baldassarre Peruzzi. La struttura è semplice e lineare, al secondo piano la villa è contornata da un fregio a scopo decorativo. The villa was built between 1506 and 1512 by the architect Baldassarre Peruzzi. The structure is the one of a Renaissance villa and on the second floor there is a frieze that have a decorative sense.

La loggia di Galatea: La loggia prende il nome dalla ninfa Galatea, dipinta da Raffaello Sanzio, che è raffigurata su una parete. La fanciulla è su un cocchio trainato da delfini e attorno a lei danzano festosi Tritoni e Nereidi. La loggia fu però affrescata da diversi artisti. The Loggia takes its name from the nymph Galatea, frescoed by Raphael, that is painted on a wall. The girl is on a chariot trained by dolphins. Around her there are tritons and sea nymphs. The all Loggia has been frescoed by many artists. Loggia of Galatea:

Baldassarre Peruzzi nel 1511 affrescò sulla volta l’oroscopo di Agostino Chigi. In 1511 Baldassarre Peruzzi designed the horoscope of Agostino Chigi on the vault of the Loggia.

Tra il 1511 ed il 1512 Sebastiano del Piombo dipinse delle scene mitologiche, tratte delle Metamorfosi di Ovidio, in nove lunette. La decima fu decorata da Peruzzi e rappresenta la Testa di giovane che la leggenda attribuiva a Michelangelo Buonarroti. Between 1511 and 1512 Sebastiano del Piombo painted some mythological scenes, taken from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, in nine lunettes. The tenth one is the large head of a young man, painted by Peruzzi. A legend sais that this lunette was painted by Michelangelo, but it is false.

cocchio tirato da delfini. Intorn, in epoca successiva, furono dipinti paesaggi seicenteschi attribuiti al Dughet. Sebastiano del Piombo affrescò anche la figura del grande Polifemo innamorato della bella ninfa Galatea. I paesaggi nelle lunette vennero dipinti nel seicento, probabilmente da Dughet. Sebastiano del Piombo frescoed also the figure of a big Polifemo, in love with the beauty Galatea. The landscapes in lunettes have been painted in the 17° century, probably by Dughet.

The Loggia of Cupid and Psyche: La Loggia di Amore e Psiche: Questa Loggia, attribuita a Raffaello ed alla sua scuola, vede raffigurata la storia di Amore e Psiche. Cinquecentesca però è solamente la volta, le pareti, infatti, che dovevano raffigurare le peripezie terrene di Psiche, non furono completate, ed ora rappresentano dei trompe l’oeil. In this Loggia, frescoed by Raphael and his school, is painted the love story of Cupid and Psyche. Just the vault was painted in fifteenth century, infact, the walls have been decorated in sixteenth century and represent some pseudoarchitectural elements.

Raphael also transformed the vault of the Loggia into a pergola, adorned with hanging festoons, as though the greenery of the gardens had invaded the Villa. The festoons are rich of fruit and vegetables from Europe and America. Lots of those vegetables are phallic symbols. Raffaello trasformò la volta in un pergola, decorata con dei festoni, che dovevano prolungare il giardino all’interno della villa. I festoni, ricchi di frutta sia Europea che Americana, sono ricchi di simboli fallici.

Two fictive tapestries are painted on the ceiling. They represent the splendid Council of the Gods, where the unjustly persecuted girl is finally with the gods, and the Marriage of Cupid and Psyche, where are painted lots of divine’s courples. Those scenes are the end of all the story. Sul soffitto sono dipinti due arazzi che rappresentano, uno, il Consiglio degli dei, dove Psiche viene accolta tra gli dei, l’altro, Il matrimonio di Amore e Psiche, in cui sono dipinte diverse copie divine. Queste scene rappresentano l’epilogo della storia.

La stanza del fregio: Room of the frieze: La stanza del fregio era usata come “sala d’attesa” o per importanti cerimonie. La stanza prende il nome dal fregio che corre lungo la parte alta del muro. La decorazione è stata effettuata da Baldassarre Peruzzi e rappresenta le fatiche di Ercole ed altri episodi mitologici. This was originally the room used as a waiting room, but it was also used for important cerimonies. The room takes its name from the frieze that runs around the top of the walls. This decoration has been painted by Baldassarre Peruzzi. It represents the twelve labours of Hercules and other mythological episodes.

Salone delle prospettive: Hall of perspectives: La sala, dipinta da Baldassarre Peruzzi, è un classico esempio di pittura prospettica. I muri della stanza sembrano come sfondati secondo le leggi prospettiche a creare giochi ed illusioni. Sul fregio corrono scene di figure mitologiche e sul camino è dipinta la fucina di Vulcano. The room, frescoed by Baldassarre Peruzzi, is an example of perspective painting. The walls appear as balcony on the city. The freize represents mythological figures and on the chamney is painted the Volcano’s laboratory.

Durante I restauri più recenti è stata rinvenuta una scritta tra due colonne dipinte nella sala delle prospettive. L’incisone sul muro risale all’arrivo del Lanzichenecchi ed al sacco di Roma, è in Tedesco e dice: “1528 Perchè io non dovrei ridere? I Lanzichenecchi hanno fatto correre il Papa.” During the last restoration, has been found an inscription in German, written by a Lansquenet, during the Sacking of Rome. It says: “Why shouldn’t I, who is writing, laugh? The Lansquenets have set the Pope on the run”.

Sala delle nozze: Wedding room: Questa era la camera da letto di Agostino Chigi e della sua sposa. Alle pareti si possono ammirare affreschi raffiguranti Alessandro Magno e la bella Roxane. La stanza è molto piccolo per noi, ma non per quelle che erano le tradizioni dell’epoca. The room can be called also of Roxane and Alexander. They are the protagonists of all the frescoes of the room. This was the bedroom of Agostino Chigi and his wife.
