G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi GEM MUON SYSTEM OVERVIEW Total: 1368 MWPC GEM + Spares Completed Ongoing June ‘05April ‘05April ‘06June ‘06 October ‘06 Planned end date

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi MWPC Production overview CERN, LNF, PNPI_1 sites now in production (3 out of 6). FE and FI starting up. Chambers produced : CERN M3R1 14(100%) M3R2 3 LNF M3R358(100%) PNPI 1 M3R448(~ 24%) Total123( ~ 8.5%) CERN and LNF have achieved the nominal rates (1 and 2.5 ch/week) as peak values. 2 ch/week seems to be the average sustainable rate for LNF PNPI_1 rate is increasing: 29 June-23 July 12 ch or 3 ch/week. Should reach 4-5 ch/week in September

4 Panel production in Teramo (sept 04) 1200 panels produced (over 5700 planned) – Stop of the production in August (still at 50% of FR4 sheets delivered by ELTOS) PNPI : M3R4-M2R4 under production LNF : production of M5R3 started CERN : waiting for M2R2-M2R1 PZ-FE – FI : in stand-by (enough already done) Problems Quality tests at the company improved Still some problems with the new molds – Erratic quality - may be due to increased thickness of FR4 sheets (0.8 up to 0.95 mm, although still in acceptance) - under investigation Production yield: 95% (60 rejects) LNF team (Alvaro & co.) continuing to check the planarity of all panels ROME2 panel-o-meter with new measuring technique: work in progress

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi Delays in MWPC production and actions The estimated delay today is about 6 months (estimated from 10% milestone) The estimated delay makes impossible to have all the chambers ready by end of 2005 (this was also clear one year ago). Moreover, it seems risky to assume that the planned rates (1, 2.5 or 5 ch/week) can be maintained for long periods. Actions done reshuffle the production among the centers move some chambers (R1 of M4 and M5) from Ferrara to CERN inject more manpower at CERN to increase its capacity from 1 to 2 ch/week A new schedule was produced with these assumptions and an average production capacity 80% of the nominal one (i.e. 2 and 4 ch/week) For the M1 chambers (2 gaps) and the small ones (R1 and R2) we assume 3 ch/week However, installation will have to be prolonged into 2006

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi LNF

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi MWPC Sharing (After reshuffling. See detailed table at the end) PNPI600 chambers (R4) LNF248 chambers (R3 and M1R4) FE246 chambers (R2, R3 and M1R4) FI218 chambers (R4 and M1R4) CERN134 chambers Total 1446 (with ~ 6% spares) CERN took over 54 more chambers: 26 M1R2 and 28 M4/M5 R1 INFN decreased by 28 (M4/M5 R1)

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi CERN Production Total: 134 chambers (with spares)

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi LNF Production Total: 248 chambers (with spares)  4 months  Jun 06

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi Total: 350 chambers (with spares) PNPI 1 Production

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi Problems during production  Delays in delivery from industries  Externally manufactured parts outside specifications (e.g. panels, bars)  Gluing problems (connected with panel cleaning, Kapton on bars)  Accidents, repairs etc.  Logistics Some of these problems are probably linked to the transition from pre-production phase to the mass-production phase:  e.g. two qualities of gold coating (chemical vs. electrolytic) LNF (and to less extent CERN and PNPI) experience has proven that these sites were correctly dimensioned and equipped for the planned production rate. The logistics with PNPI should now be under control. Last shipment (this month) contained the panels for 75 chambers (mostly M3R4 and some M2R4) the tooling for equipping PNPI_2 (which should start operating in December) This is going according to the plans made 2 months ago.

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi Ferrara, Potenza and Firenze sites Ferrara and Firenze suffered from a relocation of the laboratories and workshops to new buildings (administrative issues etc.). This delayed the setting up of the labs of several months w.r.t. the original schedule (startup of production delayed of ~ 8 months in both labs) Moreover, the commissioning of the tooling and the startup of the production seems to demand a quite long training period.  Since their production procedure is different from the other sites (wiring and soldering is done on the same machine) their capability to reach 2.5 ch/week cannot be extrapolated from present experience. Luckily, the report of the Referees of the Ferrara PRR did not point out fundamental problems in the production process. The Source Table for Ferrara (built in Roma2) is well advanced. The mechanics is delivered and the motors, the source container etc. should arrive by end of September. Hope to have it installed in Ferrara before the end of the year.

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi Ferrara, Potenza and Firenze sites Ferrara had the PRR on June 8. The outcome was basically positive, with some remarks. Since then they had lot of problems from bad gluing of panels to bars, which only recently seem to be solved. (Ferrara panels are glued in Potenza.)  Bad gluing caused serious gas leaks on the first 7 chambers built. The problem was due to inadequate cleaning of panels. Unfortunately the first batch of gold-plated panels was not the same as in LNF (chemical vs. electrolytic) so they needed different procedures Cleaning now understood (Potenza worked a lot on it) Last chambers are gas tight and hold HV The first chamber was tested recently in LNF and looks OK. Other 5 ready to test The Potenza gluing laboratory is now equipped with two tables as Firenze (LNF has three)

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi “channel” inside glue Detached HV bar Effect of improper cleaning

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi Firenze PRR Firenze had the PRR on September 8. The referees congratulated the lab for the effort made to bring the site from scratch to production in one year only. 3 chambers built since end July 1st chamber unsatisfactory (not uniform) 2nd and 3rd chambers  OK but some problems still present They are now fine-tuning the tools. Plan to resume production end September L1L1 L2L2 L4L4 L3L3 One problem: Wire tension too low (calibration)

19 Muon Filter Construction Status: The chariots for the filter support have been fitted with rollers, and the filter is now in construction We should meet the December milestone despite the one-month delay in startup

20 Muon System - Infrastructure Status of supports: Supports for M2-M5: Detailed FEA calculations have been carried out for the general support structure for both the static and dynamic case, which lead to some improvements in the design  but more expensive! Design review October, tender to be launched after (we have a good candidate) Chamber for support walls under LNF responsibility: commission for tender has been appointed.

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi Beam test at GIF of a final M3R3 (LNF) fully equipped with final electronics 12 CARDIAC boards (CARIOCA+DIALOG): 192 physical ch  96 output logical ch; 2 I 2 C long chains and 1 service board controlled via OPC CANBUS by a PVSS program developed in Roma 1 Study of efficiency and time properties as a function of the HV in different rate conditions The CARDIAC didn’t shown any strange behavior up to 1.2 MHz/channel (higher than the highest rate/channel expected in LHCb) The control system of the electronics chain worked well. For the first time we also took same data with a threshold of 5 fC. 4-gap: 99% 2550 V 2-gap: 99% 2650 V Also final M3R1 (CERN) tested successfully cardiac

G. Carboni - Gruppo1 Assisi Conclusions Initial delays do not appear to be recoverable. Corrective actions are being adopted:  reshuffle production  allocate extra resources to CERN site This allows to keep the initial delays constant even with the reduced (80%) production capacity of several sites. If everything goes OK, the 50% milestone will shift from February to August-September 2005 (6-7 months). We will see before the end of this year if the scheme works. However, even if the assumptions are correct, the schedule is extremely tight and has no margin (end of production in November 2006) for 2007 runs.

G. Carboni - HV system – September HV System HV connectors to allow daisy-chain Jumpers A preferred solution (see next slide) is now to have a Patch Panel where the grouping is done. Then each chamber is connected via a multiconductor cable (for the 4 gaps) to the PP. We can afford easily 1:6, 1:4, 1:3 and 1:2 reductions. 1:4 in M2-M5 is called Nominal Grouping In M1 and critical areas we could prefer a smaller reduction ratio. Options discussed: 1:3 R2-R4 1:3 R4, 1:2 R2-R3 1:3 R4, 1:1 R2-R3 Chamber

G. Carboni - HV system – September SY1527 minimum system (896 channels) With 3 modules per half station we have 84 channels This would allow for M2-M5: 1:8 on R4 (48 ch), 1:6 on R3 (16 ch) and 1:4 on R2-R3 (18 ch) On M1 we need at least 4 modules (option b)). R4 64 ch R2R3 36 ch Total100 ch The minimal system would therefore have 32 modules which can be accomodated in 4 crates. Spare channels M1: 12 M2-M5: 2 channels per half station (hospital voltage) 32 HV cards 6900 € (A1733B 6375 €) € 18% discount on cards Total: 220 k€ or 330 kCHF (307 kCHF)

Roma 7/9/2004 – Incontro coi referee LHCb Stato elettronica 34 Adriano LaiTESTS DIALOG on the CARDIAC was configured using the PVSS-based programs (already SUCCESSFULLY tested at the GIF) Minor modification were necessary to complete the DIALOG setup (timing) Proper operation of the connection PC-KVASER-ELMB-CARDIAC was first checked on DIALOG scalers without using the IB

Roma 7/9/2004 – Incontro coi referee LHCb Stato elettronica 35 Adriano LaiTESTS Data were then checked directly at the end of the chain following 2 possible (optical) data links: 1. Trigger Link 2. DAQ link Both checks were performed every time. This was possible by reading data on a FIFO in the optical receiver board Performed tests: 1.Using the pulse functionality on SB and DIALOG, generate specific (simple) DIALOG inputs and find them in the right place at the end of the chain 2.Generate specific DIALOG inputs put in specific logical combination among them and find the right logical channel (only) in the right place at the end of the chain. 2 kinds of combinations were possible: a) 2 logical channels starting from 4 physical channels (2xOR2); b) 1 logical channel starting from 4 physical channels (1xOR4). 3.Whenever necessary (and it was necessary) realign the channels in time using the DIALOG timing facilities in order to obtain the OR correctly on the SYNC pipelines. A trigger system was not available: we used “continuous” pulsing at the input of the chain
