Vocabulary 1. Greetings Build into daily routines starting with Buongiorno and Arrivederci and then gradually adding in more vocabulary as learners progress. Buongiorno! Hello Salve! Hello Buongiorno Signora for a teacher Maestra! Hello Miss Buongiorno Signore for a teacher Maestro! Hello Sir Ciao! Hi Facciamo l’appello! We will take the register Facciamo la nanna Go to sleep Buona Notte! Goodnight Arricederci! Goodbye

Buongiorno! http://youtu.be/o7pmy-u1awI

Buongiorno Maestra!

Buongiorno Maestro!

Ciao!

Facciamo l’appello! You can take the register and ask pupils to say Buongiorno (Signora/Signore) when you call their name.

Facciamo la nanna

Buonanotte!

Arrivederci!

Embedding the language Do the register in Italian each morning – teacher says, “Facciamo l’appello” and pupils respond with “buongiorno”. Use a la canzone del buongiorno and/or an la canzone dell’arrivederci at the start and end of each day. Use Fate la nanna and buonanotte with a Italian puppet. You can “put him to bed” at the end of a Italian lesson getting the class to say “Fai la nanna + name” and then saying buonanotte to him instead of goodbye .

Sample activities You will find a bank of sample activities which you can use to practise the vocabulary in the classroom. This is not a prescriptive list of activities and you can use or adapt them to suit the needs of your class. You will find a set of more challenging activities in First Level Greetings.

Buongiorno ou Buonanotte? Pupils look at the selection of photos and then decide if they would say this is buongiorno o buonanotte? This can be further extended to create a wall display if doing day and night paintings for example. Buongiorno o Buonanotte? Look at the photos and decide if you would say Buongiorno (literally this means good day) or Buona notte (good night). I have experienced the wonder of looking at the vastness of the sky, and can recognise the sun, moon and stars and link them to daily patterns of life. SCN 0-06a

Toc, toc, toc! If you are using a puppet for Italian, you can keep it in a box with a lid on it (its bed) and ask the pupils to knock on the door to wake him/her up by saying “Toc, toc, toc”. When he “wakes up” they can then say Buongiorno! to the puppet. When it’s time for him to go back to bed, they can then say “Facciamo la nanna, arrivederci, buonanotte” etc. If you like you can also add in “svegliarsi” which means wake up. Toc, toc, toc! means knock, knock, knock.

Songs and videos! You will find a bank of sample songs and videos which you can use to practise the vocabulary in the classroom. This is not a prescriptive list of songs and you can use or adapt them to suit the needs of your class. You will find a set of more supported activities in Early Feelings and more challenging activities in Level 2 Feelings.
