Il RITO DELLE CENERI The Rite of Ashes

La Quaresima inizia con il mercoledì delle ceneri che pone termine al periodo di allegria e spensieratezza chiamato carnevale. In questo giorno, tutti i cattolici, sono tenuti a far penitenza e ad osservare il digiuno e lastinenza dalle carni. Lent begins with the "Ash Wednesday" which concludes the period of joy and abandon called carnival. On this day, all Catholics are obliged to do penance and to observe fasting and abstinence from meat.

Durante la liturgia delle ceneri il celebrante sparge un pizzico di cenere benedetta sul capo per ricordare loro la caducità della vita terrena e per iniziare l'impegno penitenziale di tutta la Quaresima. During the liturgy, the celebrant of the ashes scatter a pinch of holy ash on his head to remind them of the transience of earthly life and to begin the penitential commitment of the whole of Lent.

Questo rito prevede la pronuncia di una formula di ammonimento: «Ricordati che sei polvere e in polvere ritornerai» oppure «Convertiti e credi al Vangelo». Il segno della debole e fragile condizione dell'uomo: Abramo rivolgendosi a Dio dice: "Vedi come ardisco parlare al mio Signore, io che sono polvere e cenere..." (Gen 18,27). This ritual involves the delivery of a formula of warning: "You are dust and to dust you shall return" or "convert and believe the gospel. "The sign of the weak and frail human condition: Abraham spoke up again, "I know that I am very bold to speak like this to my Lord, I who am only dust and ashes! (Gen 18,27)

Giobbe riconoscendo il limite profondo della propria esistenza, con senso di estrema prostrazione, afferma: "Mi ha gettato nel fango: son diventato polvere e cenere" (Gb 30,19). (Jon 3, 6) Judith also invites invites all people to do penance for God to intervene to free him:

"Ogni uomo o donna israelita e i fanciulli che abitavano in Gerusalemme si prostrarono davanti al tempio e cosparsero il capo di cenere e, vestiti di sacco, alzarono le mani davanti al Signore" (Gdt 4,11). All the men of Israel in Jerusalem, with their wives and children, bowed before the Temple, sprinkled ashes on their heads and held out their hands in supplication before the Lord. (Jdt 4,11)

Quando dunque tu fai l'elemosina, non metterti a suonare la tromba davanti a te, come fanno gl'ipocriti nelle sinagoghe e nelle strade, per averne gloria presso gli uomini. In verità vi dico: hanno già ricevuto la loro ricompensa. (Mt 6, 2) When you give something to the poor, do not have it trumpeted before you, as do those who want to be seen in the synagogues and in the streets in order to be praised by the people. I assure you, they have been already paid in full. (Mt 6, 2)

Ma mentre fai l'elemosina, non sappia la tua sinistra quello che fa la tua destra, in modo che la tua elemosina rimanga nel segreto; e il Padre tuo che vede nel segreto te ne darà la ricompensa». (Mt 6, 3-4) If you give something to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your gift remains really secret. Your Father who sees what is kept secret, will reward you. (Mt 6, 3-4)

«E quando pregate, non siate come gli ipocriti che amano pregare stando ritti nelle sinagoghe e negli angoli delle piazze, per farsi notare dagli uomini. In verità vi dico: hanno già ricevuto la loro ricompensa. (Mt 6, 5) When you pray, do not be like those who want to be seen. They love to stand and pray in the synagogues or on street corners to be seen by everyone. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. (Mt 6, 5)

Ma tu, quando vuoi pregare, entra nella tua camera e, serratone l'uscio, prega il Padre tuo che sta nel segreto, e il Padre tuo che vede nel segreto te ne darà la ricompensa. (Mt 6, 6) When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father who is with you in secret; and your Father who sees what is kept secret will reward you. (Mt 6, 6)

«Quando digiunate, non prendete un aspetto triste, come gli ipocriti, i quali si sfigurano la faccia per farsi vedere dagli uomini che digiunano. In verità vi dico: hanno già ricevuto la loro ricompensa. (Mt 6, 16) When you fast, do not put on a miserable face as do the hypocrites. They put on a gloomy face, so people can see they are fasting. I tell you this: they have been paid in full already. (Mt 6, 16)

Ma tu, quando digiuni, ungiti la testa e làvati il viso, per non far vedere agli uomini che digiuni, ma solo al Padre tuo che è nel segreto; e il Padre tuo che vede nel segreto te ne darà la ricompensa». (Mt 6, 17-18) When you fast, wash your face and make yourself look cheerful, because you are not fasting for appearances or for people, but for your Father who sees beyond appearances.
