Words of the river The river “Ticino” is a tributary of the Po. It rises in Switzerland and flows through the Lake Maggiore. The Ticino joins the Po a few kilometers downstream of Pavia, the ancient Ticinum. It is about 280 kilometers (173 miles) long. A river is a natural waterway coming from rain or ice. It has its source in a spring, a lake or in a glacier. Youthful river - a river with a steep gradient that has very few tributaries and flows quickly, like the river Ticino Mature river - a river with a gradient that is less steep than those of youthful rivers and flows more slowly than youthful rivers. A mature river is fed by many tributaries , like River Thames.

Flora e fauna del Parco del Ticino L’opera dell’uomo ha modificato profondamente la vegetazione del parco ma ci sono ancora zone, come le lanche, le marcite, i boschi e i canneti, dove è possibile incontrare animali che per noi esistevano solo nelle favole o nelle foreste dei tempi passati quando sulle rive del Ticino pascolavano ancora i cervi e di notte si poteva sentire il lupo ululare. Gli esseri viventi che abitano vicino al fiume dipendono gli uni dagli altri in un equilibrio delicato e prezioso: per questo bisogna rispettarli e ricordare che l’ambiente fluviale è anche casa nostra! Il nido dei nidi Circa 200 anni prima di Cristo, alcuni popoli liguri, giunsero un giorno sul Ticino . Il capo decise di fermarsi in un luogo che aveva terreno fertile e acqua limpida . Lì stabilirono la loro residenza sulla riva sinistra del fiume ,ma siccome non sapeva dove fondare la città , “fece allestire una piroga, col la quale vagò lungo il fiume con la sua meravigliosa figlia”. Lungo il tragitto la giovane lanciò in cielo una colomba e ne interpretò il volo. La colomba si diresse decisa verso un punto preciso: l’albero maestoso di una radura e li si posò Ora ,dove sorgeva il grosso albero ,sorse la chiesa di S. Tommaso . Il re dei liguri ,disse :-“questo è il nido dei nidi. Guai a chi oserà distruggerlo ! “ Lì fondarono la città di Pavia.

Fiumi di storia….rivers of history LONDON = LONDINIUM Tower Bridge was completed in 1894, after 8 years of construction. Originally, London Bridge was the only crossing over the Thames. As London grew, so more bridges were added, but these were all to the west of London Bridge, since the area east of London Bridge had become a busy port. In the 19th century, the east end of London became so densely populated that public pressure mounted for a bridge to the east of London Bridge, as journeys for pedestrians and vehicles were being delayed literally by hours. PAVIA = TICINUM Il primo Ponte Coperto fu costruito nell’anno 500 A.C. all’epoca di Ottaviano:era in muratura,con più di 10 pilastri in granito. Nel corso dei secoli fu restaurato o rifatto,servendo alla città non solo come mezzo per l’attraversamento,ma anche come difesa ,avendo due torri all’estremità. Il ponte detto“Visconteo”(1352 -54)sostituì quello romano:aveva sei piloni,sette arcate in uguali ed era lungo circa 216 metri. Era coperto da un tetto e nel 1635,pare che sulla seconda arcata fosse stato costruito un ponte levatoio per motivi difensivi. Il ponte Vecchio, sino al 1848 , segnò il confine tra il Piemonte e la Lombardia.

A legend from the time of Charles II tells that when there are no longer ravens in the Tower, the Kingdom will fail. I mitici eroi Argonauti, dopo aver rubato il vello d’oro, fuggirono ai loro nemici risalendo il corso del fiume Danubio. Questa leggenda nasconde un fondo di verità. Probabilmente gli antichi greci andarono nell’Est europeo alla ricerca dell’oro che I popoli danubiani raccoglievano con l’aiuto di una pelle di ariete (il vello d’oro) che attirava le pagliuzze del metallo disperse nel fiume. All’inizio del mondo, il fiume Reno era abitato da creature fatate, le Ondine. Il nano Alberico, innamorato di loro, si fece forgiare un anello dai poteri magici con l’oro del Reno. Alberico venne catturato con l’inganno ma, grazie all’anello, riuscì a trasformare il nemico Fafnir in drago. Il mostro ebbe il compito di custodire l’oro e l’anello magico in una caverna sul fondo del fiume. Vicino a Notre Dame, passato il Pont Au Doble c’è la chiesa di St. Julien le Pauvre, che consacrò la sua esistenza al servizio dei viaggiatori che attraversavano la Senna. Una notte di tempesta si presentò a lui un viandante molto povero, che chiese di essere portato alla riva destra. Il santo vinse la paura e lo accontentò. Quel poveretto era in realtà Gesù.

I vecchi amici del fiume I renaioli e i giarò Era uno dei mestieri più faticosi: ci voleva infatti una gran forza per scavare, immersi nell’acqua fino alla cintola, quintali e quintali di sabbia o ghiaia che veniva caricata su enormi barconi spinti a remi o con le “pertiche” lungo il fiume. I “navaroli” Pavia era un importante porto fluviale fin dai tempi più antichi, perchè il Ticino è affluente del Po e dal fiume Po anche le regioni distanti dal mare potevano raggiungere il Mediterraneo. Documenti medievali e perfino un affresco nella chiesa di san Teodoro dimostrano che a pavia c’erano navigatori e traghettatori di professione. I pescatori Quando la carne era un lusso da gran signori, i nonni si arrangiavano a pescare ogni genere di pesci, che nel Ticino erano abbondantissimi e si potevano cucinare in mille modi. Se la pesca era scarsa c’erano sempre le rane, il pollo dei poveri, che ora sono una prelibatezza da ristorante di lusso. Le lavandaie Adesso c’è la lavatrice in ogni casa, ma un tempo lungo la riva del Ticino, vicino al Borgo Basso di Pavia si potevano vedere le lavandaie con la schiena china e le ginocchia nell’acqua, che cantavano in coro per allontanare la fatica.

Words of stone San Pietro in Ciel D’oro is a very beautiful and important church. It is very old ( built during 8th century) and it is made of red bricks. Inside we can see the famous ARCA of St. Augustine. This marble coffin is one of the treasures of Pavia. It’s fantastic! San Michele looks wonderful early in the morning, when the sun paints it pink and gold. This ancient church is made of bright and tender sand stone and it is all decorated with fantastic animals and symbols. In middle age the emperors were crowned there.

Dear friends, we are having a break in the Luxemburg garden, dedicated by Napoleon to the children of Paris. The old carousel and the playground are funny . In spring the botanic garden is fantastic! Napoleon says: “see you soon in this place!”

Steamy windows, snow covered rooftops, crowded streets and the blue Danube changing in silver-grey. Vienna in winter it’s magic! Happy Christmas to everybody!

BUDAPEST’S MAGIC!

Pavia is a very old town on the river Ticino, called “Ticinum” by the Romans. Later its name was “Papia” and then “Pavia”. It was the capital city under the Goth and Longobard kings. The famous emperor Frederick Barbarossa was crowned in St. Michael’s church. Ships for the Holy Land left next to St. Lanfranco’s peer. In the Middle Age The river Ticino was an important waterway. Cologne is a great city in Germany, on the river Rhine. It is very old and it has got beautiful monuments, like the wonderful cathedral. From Cologne you can take boat trips on the Rhine to France. There are lots of castles and a beautiful sight. Maybe you can see Lorelei too. London is the capital city of the UK. It is the largest city in western Europe and its people speak 300 languages. There are lots of things to see: the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Piccadilly Circus, Hide Park and the other beautiful gardens of London….. You can take a boat on the river Thames , go by tube or take a red double decker bus. Get on! The Prater is a very famous fun fair. See Vienna from the giant wheel, then have a rest in a beautiful park in the Danube Island. You can go surfing or swim, dive or sail with a small boat. There are also rowing and canoe championship in the Danube. Are you hungry? Eat a slice of delicious Sacher cake . Budapest is the capital of Hungary. It is divided by the river Danube in two towns: Buda and Pest. In the old Buda you can see the Castle Hill and the Fishermen’s Bastion with its wonderful sight- seen. Budapest is magic in summer evenings! If you go to Paris you can’t miss the Eiffel tower. It’s 320 meters tall. Climb the western part of Notre Dame and see the Seine with Hunchback and the scary gargoiles. Look at the beautiful round windows!

Questo è il nostro punto di ritrovo, come lo era per i pellegrini e per i cavalieri

Sulla facciata della basilica notiamo delle grandi ciotole con strani uccelli dipinti, forse dei pavoni, e con delle scritte in arabo. Vengono da molto lontano. Furono portate dalla Terra Santa per rendere più bella la chiesa allora dedicata al Santo Sepolcro.

Sostiamo sul sagrato come crociati in attesa di partire, dopo aver fatto rifornimento, sulle navi pavesi per raggiungere il Po e, arrivati a Venezia, attraversare il mare verso la Palestina.

C’è un passaggio “segreto” che permette di entrare in basilica dal chiostro. Dentro la chiesa c’è anche un affresco che racconta di altri fatti sanguinosi avvenuti nel medioevo, come l’uccisione di Tommaso Beckett a Canterbury.
