Concetto darwiniano di selezione naturale « La conservazione delle differenze e variazioni individuali favorevoli e la distruzione di quelle nocive sono state da me chiamate "selezione naturale" o "sopravvivenza del più adatto". Le variazioni che non sono né utili né nocive non saranno influenzate dalla selezione naturale, e rimarranno allo stato di elementi fluttuanti, come si può osservare in certe specie polimorfe, o infine, si fisseranno, per cause dipendenti dalla natura dell'organismo e da quella delle condizioni » (1859)

Di qui il concetto di ‘adattamento’ Col termine adattamento, sulla scia di Darwin, intendiamo il processo per cui una struttura anatomica, un processo fisiologico o un tratto comportamentale di un organismo si evolve in un periodo di tempo sulla spinta della selezione naturale, al fine cioè di aumentare il successo riproduttivo di tale organismo (nelle determinate condizioni ambientali in cui l'organismo si trova). Secondo Darwin gli adattamenti sono lentissimi, numerosi e lievi.

Quale posto per l’essere umano? Nell’Origine della Specie vi sono solo cenni sporadici e indiretti alla subordinazione dello stesso essere umano alla legge della selezione naturale, di cui però Darwin era già perfettamente persuaso

Grandi sono le differenze intellettive, ma «dobbiamo anche ammettere che vi è una differenza molto maggiore di capacità mentale tra uno dei pesci inferiori, come una lampreda o un anfiosso e una delle scimmie superiori, che tra questa e un uomo; tuttavia tale differenza è colmata da numerose gradazioni». L’idea di Darwin (1872)… … è che queste emozioni umane abbiano un loro precedente filogenetico nelle emozioni (e nel modo di esprimerle) degli «animali inferiori»; Saremmo dunque nell’ambito di una semiotica «naturale», che tuttavia fissa in modo inequivocabile il nostro legame con gli altri animali.

Come la voce esprime l’emozione That the pitch of the voice bears some relation to certain states of feeling is tolerably clear. A person gently complaining of ill-treatment, or slightly suffering, almost always speaks in a high-pitched voice. Dogs, when a little impatient, often make a high piping note through their noses, which at once strikes us as plaintive; but how difficult it is to know whether the sound is essentially plaintive, or only appears so in this particular case, from our having learnt by experience what it means! Rengger, states that the monkeys (Cebus azarae), which he kept in Paraguay, expressed astonishment by a half-piping, half-snarling noise; anger or impatience, by repeating the sound hu hu in a deeper, grunting voice; and fright or pain, by shrill screams. On the other hand, with mankind, deep groans and high piercing screams equally express an agony of pain. Laughter may be either high or low; so that, with adult men, as Haller long ago remarked, the sound partakes of the character of the vowels (as pronounced in German) O and A; whilst with children and women, it has more of the character of E and I; and these latter vowel sounds naturally have, as Helmholtz has shown, a higher pitch than the former; yet both tones of laughter equally express enjoyment or amusement.
