1 L’IMMAGINE DI DIO THE IMAGE OF GOD Molte persone non credono più in Dio perché ne hanno un’immagine negativa che spesso, anche noi cristiani, abbiamo contribuito a dare. Many persons no longer believe in God because they have formed of Him a distorted image, which, unfortunately we, Christians, have contributed to transmit.

2 Nessun uomo ha mai visto Dio per cui la sua immagine nasce dalle cose dette e vissute da chi sostiene di credere in Lui. No man has ever seen God: hence the image we have of Him emerges from things said and lived by those who profess to believe in Him.

3 Coloro che credono in Dio sono i primi che possono trasmettere al mondo un’ immagine positiva di Dio, attraverso il loro comportamento e la loro coerenza di vita. Those who believe in God are the first to transmit to the world a positive image of Him, through their behaviour and the coherence of their life.

4 Se i credenti operano il bene, se sanno amare, aiutare, condividere ecc. si può pensare che il Dio in cui credono è un Dio buono. Se al contrario i credenti sono i primi a compiere il male e ogni sorta di ingiustizia si penserà che il loro Dio è cattivo. If believers operate rightly, if they know how to love, how to help, how to share etc. others will think that the God in whom they believe is a God of goodness. If, on the contrary, they are the first to act unjustly, others will think that their God is an evil one.

5 Molte persone hanno una concezione di Dio molto semplicistica: se Dio fa soffrire i bambini è crudele, se permette tutto il male possibile vuol dire che non esiste, se si fa mettere in croce è un dio debole e cos’ via. Many people have of God a simplistic idea. If God allows children to suffer, He is cruel. If He allows so much evil to happen, it means that He does not exist, if He lets Himself to be crucified, He is weak, and so on and so forth.

6 Tuttavia i cristiani, che sono i diretti discendenti degli Apostoli che conobbero Cristo di persona, attraverso Gesù hanno avuto un’immagine dolce e stupenda di Dio. Aver fede vuol dire fidarsi e ancora oggi ci fidiamo di coloro che ci hanno tramandato la fede attraverso l’immagine di un Gesù buono e santo per eccellenza. However, Christians are the direct descendants of the Apostles, who were privileged to live with Jesus. Through Jesus they have formed a tender and stupendous idea of God. To have faith means to trust, and even today we trust those who have transmitted to us the idea of a Jesus who was gentle and holy par excellence.

7 Ma chi non è cristiano che immagine di Dio può avere oggi? Se Dio è Amore e Carità i cristiani devono vivere amore e carità! Oggi non esiste altra strada per evangelizzare il mondo se non quella di una testimonianza autentica e sincera dell’amore di Dio. Più che mai il mondo ha bisogno di questa immagine di Dio. Santa Madre Teresa ha speso tutta la sua vita per testimoniare in Dio Amore e Carità. Siamo tutti chiamati a mostrare al mondo il vero volto di Dio. However, what image can non-Christians have of God? If God is Love and Charity. Christians must live love and charity. Nowadays there is no other way of evangelization than that of an authentic and sincere witness of the Love of God. More than ever the world needs such an image of God. Holy Mother Teresa spent her whole life witnessing to God’s love and charity. We are all called to show to the world the true face of God.

8 E Dio che disse: Brilli la luce dalle tenebre, è brillato nei nostri cuori, per far risplendere la conoscenza della gloria divina che rifulge sul volto di Cristo. (2Cor 4:6) God who said, Let the light shine out of darkness, has also made the light shine in our hearts to radiate and to make known the Glory of God, as it shines in the face of Christ. (2Cor 4:6)

9 E Dio creò l'uomo a sua immagine; lo creò a immagine di Dio; li creò maschio e femmina (Gen 1:27). So God created man in his image; in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them (Gen 1:27). Beato il popolo che ti sa acclamare e cammina, o Signore, alla luce del tuo volto; (Sal 89:16) Blessed is the people who know your praise. They walk in the light of your face. (Ps 89:16)

10 ai quali il dio di questo secolo ha accecato la mente incredula, perché non vedano il fulgore del vangelo della gloria di Cristo, immagine di Dio. (2Cor 4:4) The god of this world has blinded the minds of these unbelievers lest they see the radiance of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is God's image.. (2Cor 4:4) Ora dunque, o Dio nostro, ascolta la preghiera del tuo servo e le sue supplicazioni, e fa' risplendere il tuo volto sul tuo desolato santuario, per amor del Signore! (Dan 9:17) So now, our God, listen to the prayer and pleading of your servant and, for your own sake, let your face shine upon your desolate sanctuary (Dn 9:17)

11 Non mi nascondere il tuo volto, non rigettar con ira il tuo servitore;tu sei stato il mio aiuto; non mi lasciare, non m'abbandonare, o Dio della mia salvezza! (Sal 27:9) Do not hide your face from me nor turn away your servant in anger.You are my protector, do not reject me abandon me not, O God my savior! (Ps 27:9) Di te ha detto il mio cuore: «Cercate il suo volto» il tuo volto, Signore, io cerco. (Sal 27:8) My heart says to you, "I seek your face, O Lord.". (Ps 27:8)
