FROM 1890… …FOUR GENERATIONS OF EXPERIENCE IN SYNERGY WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY …when the Company first became involved in the business of processing citrus fruit, the only product for which a commercial demand existed was lemon oil, extracted by hand from the skin of the lemon on the Company's production line which employed more than one hundred workers. The process consisted of cutting the lemons in half with a very sharp knife, removing the flesh and squeezing the empty skins against natural sponges in order to remove the oil. The sponges were then pressed by hand in a screw press to produce an oil and water emulsion from which the oil was separated through a process of natural decantation. The finished product was referred to as ''sponge-pressed lemon oil'' and was exported to markets all over the world. At that time, no commercial demand for lemon juice existed and as a result steps were not taken to recover it.
