3 The passato prossimo is a compound tense, meaning it is composed of two parts
A helping verb + a past participle a past tense form of a verb, often similar to –ed ending in English avere or essere ho hai ha abbiamo avete hanno sono sei è siamo siete -are -ato -ire -ito -ere -uto * For right now, we are going to focus on the helping verb avere.

5 The Italian word ieri means yesterday…
Ieri mia madre ha preparato la torta per il compleanno di mio nonno. Io ho portato la torta in tavola. E i miei piccoli cugini hanno mangiato la torta. Noi abbiamo cantato “Tanti Auguri.”

14 The helping verb essere
Most Italian verbs form the passato prossimo with the helping verb avere, as you have already seen: Io ho parlato. I spoke; I have spoken. Noi abbiamo finito. We finished; we have finished. Loro hanno veduto. They saw; they have seen. A smaller number of verbs must use the helping verb essere instead. While these “essere” verbs are a small group, they include some very common verbs. In addition, all reflexive verbs uses essere as their helping verb. You will have to remember which are the “essere” verbs.

andare - to go arrivare - to arrive cadere - to fall diventare - to become entrare - to enter essere - to be morire - to die nascere - to be born partire - to leave restare to stay rimanere to remain ritornare to return salire to go up scendere to descend stare to be, stay tornare to return uscire to go out venire to come … and all reflexive verbs!

Important Note: Whenever a verb takes essere as its helping verb, the past participle agrees in number and gender with the subject. In other words, the final “-o” of the past participle may have to change according to masculine/feminine and singular/plural. Per esempio He arrived: She arrived: They arrived (m.): They arrived (f.): Lui è arrivato. Lei è arrivata. Loro sono arrivati. Loro sono arrivate.

22 Do you remember how regular past participles are formed in Italian?
By changing: -are to -ato -ire to -ito and -ere to -uto. Do you remember how regular past participles are formed in Italian? Very good. Now you also need to know that many past participles are not formed that way. Many are IRREGULAR. Great.
