3 Il territorio italiano è diviso in venti regioni. Da cosa derivano i loro nomi? The Italian territory is divided into twenty regions. What is the origin of their names?

4 VALLE DAOSTA- AOSTA VALLEY Aosta proviene dal nome della città Augusta Praetoria, fondata dallimperatore romano Augusto. The name «Aosta» derives from the town «Augusta Praetoria» founded by the Roman emperor Augusto. PIEMONTE - PEDMONT Il nome Piemonte deriva dallespressione latina ad pedem montium, perché situata ai piedi delle Alpi. The word Pedmont comes from a Latin expression ad pedem montium, because it is situated at the foot of the Alpes.

5 LOMBARDIA - LOMBARDY La regione prende il nome della popolazione dei Longobardi che nel VI secolo invasero questo territorio. The region takes its name from the tribe of Longobardi, who invaded this territory in the 6th century. TRENTINO ALTO ADIGE La parola Trentino proviene dal latinoTridentum, mentre lespressione Alto Adige prende il nome dalla linea di confine posta nella valle dellAdige. The word Trentino derives from Latin Tridentum; the expression Alto Adige comes from the border line situated in the Adige valley.

6 VENETO Il nome è collegato allantica popolazione dei Veneti che in passato ha abitato la regione. Its name is linked to the ancient people of Veneti, who lived in this region in the past. FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA Il nome Friuli deriva dal latino Forum Iulii, ossia Foro di Giulio. La seconda parte del nome, richiama le espressioni latine «Venetia» e delle «Alpes Iuliae». The term Friuli derives from the Latin Forum Iulii, that means Iuliuss forum. The second part of the name refers to the Latin words «Venetia» and «Alpes Iuliae».

7 LIGURIA Il nome deriva dal termine della popolazione preindoeuropea dei Liguri. The names derives from a preindoeuropean people: the Liguri. EMILIA ROMAGNA Il termine Emilia deriva dalla romana via Aemilia; la seconda parte del nome richiama la parola latina Romania, ossia appartenente ai Romani. The term Emilia comes from the Roman road «Aemilia»; Romagna,instead, refers to the Roman word Romania ( that is belonging to the Romans).

8 TOSCANA - TUSCANY Il nome deriva da Tuscii, termine che si riferisce alla popolazione che abitava la regione. The name comes from the term Tuscii, which refers to the people who lived in this region. UMBRIA Il termine Umbria identifica, in latino, il paese degli Umbri. The term Umbria identifies in Latin the Umbris territory.

9 MARCHE Il nome della regione deriva dal termine marca, cioè territorio retto da un marchese. The name comes from the term marca, the area ruled by a marquis. ABRUZZO- ABRUZZI Il nome deriva da Aprutinum, che era la zona abitata dal popolo degli «Preatutios» The name derives from Aprutinum, which was the area where the people Preatutios lived.

10 LAZIO- LATIUM Questa denominazione deriva dal termine latino Latium, che identificava la zona sulla riva del Tevere. This denomination takes its name from the Latin term Latium which identified the area on the Tiber river. CAMPANIA- CAMPANIA I Romani indicavano la zona con lespressioneCampania Felix, riferendosi al suo territorio fertile. The Romans indicated this area with the expression Campania Felix, because of its fertile land.

11 MOLISE Il nome proviene dai conti Molise, che governarono la zona. The name derives from the counts Molise, who ruled over this region. PUGLIA - APULIA Il termine deriva dal latino Apulia, riferito al popolo degli Apuli. The term comes from the Latin Apulia, refered to the area where the people of Apuli lived.

12 BASILICATA Il nome deriva dallamministratore bizantino chiamato Basilikos. The name derives from Byzantine ruler, who was called Basilikos. CALABRIA Il termine proviene dal greco Kalon-brion, ovvero Faccio sorgere il bene per la fertilità del suo territorio. The term derives from the Greek word Kalon-brion, that is I let the good arise, because of the fertility of its land.

13 SICILIA - SICILY Il termine deriva dal latino Sicilia, cioè terra abitata dai Siculi. The term derives from the Latin Sicilia, which means «land of Siculi». SARDEGNA - SARDINIA Il nome deriva dal Latino Sardinia, territorio dellantica popolazione dei Sardi. The name comes from Latin Sardinia, territory of the ancient «Sardi».
