2 Language Technologies in Trentino2 Human Language technologies as a strategic issue for the European Union The recent entrance of new partners in the EU needs the management of an increasing number of languages. The language is a major expression of a culture of a society: all the member states promote and sustain the own culture and language. The digital communication requires strong policies and actions in order to make available electronically a member states language through the digital contents European Union can play an important role in this area

3 Language Technologies in Trentino3 In Trentino there is a critical mass of researchers in this area: 80 researchers only at ITC-irst: 15 years experience in the field An extended international network of cooperation A scientific leadership role in Europe 4 projects in the first call of the VI Framework (3.4 M Euros fund ) The management of TC-STAR an integrated project on speech to speech translation technology in Europe A strong attitude to technology transition and application The human resources

8 Language Technologies in Trentino8 GST is a leader company in the area of speech technology for medical applications. WAYCOM is one of the two major leader companies in the area of Speech Portal and Telephone Speech Recognition. An International Phd school on telecommunication and computer science is carried on in cooperation with the University of Trento. A Master in Language and Communication Technology has been created in cooperation with University of Bozen and DFKI Germany. This master will join the HLT European Master initiative and network The HLT System in Trentino

9 Language Technologies in Trentino9 In the framework of the Trentino Funds ITC- IRST and DFKI of Saarbrucken (Germany) launched a new Center for the EVALUATION of Communication and Language Technologies: CLECT. Trentino Province is a partner of LANG-NET an ERA- NET initiative aiming at coordinating national and regional policies and programs in the area of Human Language Technology The HLT System in Trentino

11 Language Technologies in Trentino11 The public support has been a key factor for the success of this area. The Autonomous Province of Trento has been investing in ICT research and innovation, included Human Language Technology, since 1985. The local government is an active actor in the development of the national and european e-society project. The Pat has been very proactive playing the role of Promoter and Funder of research and innovation projects in the european framework of the Europe of Regions.

12 Language Technologies in Trentino12 Rilevanza strategica della ricerca sulle tecnologie del linguaggio per l Europa La crescita dellUnione Europea con lingresso di nuovi Paesi comporterà la gestione di un numero crescente di Lingue. La lingua è unimportante espressione della cultura e tutti gli Stati e le società intendono promuovere e mantenere la propria cultura. La comunicazione digitale richiede forti interventi per rendere utilizzabili e valorizzabili le lingue espresse nei contenuti digitali. LEuropa puo giocare un ruolo importante in questo settore

16 Language Technologies in Trentino16 Le Iniziative E presente in Trentino GST una societa leader in Italia sulle tecnologie vocali in ambito medico Una nuova societa, WAYCOM ha aperto una nuova sede a Trento Sono iniziate attivita di alta formazione nellambito della scuola di dottorato internazionale di computer science con lUniversita di Trento Sono in corso trattative con alcune Universita italiane ed europee per la creazione di un master europeo in tecnologie del Linguaggio

17 Language Technologies in Trentino17 Nellambito del Fondo Progetti PAT, IRST e DFKI di Saarbrucken hanno dato vita ad un nuovo centro CELCT che ha la missione di sviluppare attivita di valutazione delle tecnologie del linguaggio e della comunicazione. Centro autonomo che valuta le tecnologie in modo indipendnete dai soggetti che producono ricerca e tecnologia.. La PAT aderisce ad uniniziativa Era-Net LANG- NET che vede gli stati nazionali e le regioni europee concertare ed organizzare politiche e programmi di ricerca e sviluppo nel settore delle tecnologie del linguaggio Le Iniziative
