Registro e Lessico  Registro inglese a tratti più basso e più colloquiale del tedesco stilisticamente molto elaborato.  Lessico inglese semplificato – personificazione del tedesco persa, necessità di specificazione che nell’originale non c’è  Als der Nachmittag sich schon neigte As the afternoon drew to a close  Einheimische Igel, Uhus und Eulen native European hedgehogs and owls

alcune traduzioni poco riuscite  gefahren – traveled  immer sehr weit – further and further  in die Fremde – abroad  halbdunkel – dusk  verglasung – the glass  Uhus und Eulen – owls  von einem Ast zum anderen – from branch to branch  Apfelschnitz – piece of apple  falsche Welt – unreal world  geraten – arrived

Sintassi  Spesso frase tedesca non mantenuta in inglese – interruzione o unione di frasi oppure parti di una frase messi in un‘altra …,next to the Centraal Station, waiting for the pain to subside. I sat there on a bench in dappled shade… …,unmittelbar neben dem Zentralbahnhof gelegenen Tiergarten gerettet habe. Dort bin ich, bis es mir ein wenig besser wurde, auf einer Bank …gesessen…. In questo esempio il tedesco è chiaro, il protagonista è seduto finchè sta meglio, in inglese il lettore deve comprendere da solo che il protagonista è seduto mentre la sua condizione migliora.

 Spesso la traduttrice ha cambiato il tipo di frase - esempio in tedesco c’è frase relativa in inglese non più …verschiedene Tiere erkennen, die hinter der Verglasung ihr… …different animals leading their sombrous lives behind the glass…  Questi cambiamenti avvengono perché la lingua tedesca regge bene anche frasi molto complesse e lunghe, mentre quella inglese tende a semplificare le frasi e renderle più brevi (anche se a volte, come nel esempio del orsetto lavatore, troviamo frasi allungate a causa di spiegazioni che non sono presenti in tedesco)

Ritmo e Pause  È difficile mantenere lo stesso ritmo del testo tedesco visto che le frasi inglesi sono abbreviate e spezzate.  Pause sono state messe in posti molto diversi e sono anche più frequenti in inglese.  Esempio di frase mantenuta lunga (nonostante già interrotta):

der Waschbär – the racoon Wirklich gegenwärtig geblieben / ist mir eigentlich nur der Waschbär /, den ich lange beobachtete /, wie er mit ernstem Gesicht / bei einem Bächlein saß / und immer wieder / denselben Apfelschnitz wusch /, als hoffe er /, durch dieses /, weit über jede vernünftige Gründlichkeit / hinausgehende Waschen / entkommen zu können / /* aus der falschen Welt, in die er gewissermaßen / ohne sein eigenes Zutun / geraten war. The only animal / wich has remained lingering in my memoriy / is the racoon. / I watched it for a long time / as it sat beside / a little stream / with a serious expression on its face /, washing the same piece of apple / over and over again /, as if it hoped / that all this washing /, which went far beyond / any reasonable thoroughness /, would help it to escape the unreal world / in which it had arrived /, so to speak /, through no fault of its own. *Tutte le persone a cui ho fatto leggere ad alta voce il brano in tedesco si sono fermate alla prima lettura a questo punto, anticipando già la fine della frase. Questo non è successo con il brano in inglese.
