La carità è magnanima, è benigna la carità, non è invidiosa, la carità non si vanta, non si gonfia, non manca di rispetto, non cerca il suo interesse, non si adira, non tiene conto del male ricevuto, non gode dell'ingiustizia, ma si compiace della verità; tutto scusa, tutto crede, tutto spera, tutto sopporta. Chi ci separerà dall'amore di Cristo? La tribolazione, l'angoscia, la persecuzione, la fame, la nudità, i pericoli, la spada? Secondo quanto sta scritto: per causa tua siamo messi a morte tutto il giorno, fummo reputati come pecore da macello. Ma in tutte queste cose noi stravinciamo in grazia di colui che ci amò.Sono infatti persuaso che né morte né vita, né angeli né potestà, né presente né futuro, né altezze né profondità, né qualunque altra cosa creata potrà separarci dall'amore che Dio ha per noi in Cristo Gesù nostro Signore. Un comandamento nuovo vi do: “che vi amiate gli uni gli altri; come io ho amato voi, anche voi amatevi gli uni gli altri. (Gv 13, ) Lo scopo del richiamo però è la carità, la quale procede da un cuore puro, da una buona coscienza e da una fede senza simulazioni.
