CCR 11 Ottobre 2013L.Perini2 (6) Support to the evolution of EGI (European Grid Infrastructure) towards a flexible compute/data infrastructure capable of federating and enabling the sharing of resources of any kind (public or private, grid or cloud, etc.) in order to offer computing and storage services to the whole European scientific community. The proposal will address operations for supplying services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) at European level, engagement of and tailoring of services to new user communities and dissemination activities.

Momento di transizione Il Direttore di Egi.eu e Inspire ( S.Newhouse) è dimissionario ( parte a Novembre) –Per Inspire il direttore pro-tempore dovrebbe durare fino alla fine del progetto, che si prolunga di 6-8 mesi: Tiziana Ferrari con anche responsabilità di preparare i documenti in base a cui si deve formulare il progetto in H2020 –Per EGI.eu pro-tempore piu’ breve affidato a responsabile finanze : presto search committee… Review recente positiva ma suggerisce ad es. maggior coinvolgimento Users in governance CCR 11 Ottobre 2013L.Perini4

Preparazione per EGI H2020 Discussioni anche in Council di settembre con slides presentate da varie NGI (inclusa IGI) Next workshop 4-6/12 a Amsterdam Molti punti, discussi anche in gruppo INFN EGI.evol, ad es. –Ruolo EGI in infrastruttura EU Complemantarità con HPC? The issues (I) Sustainability of NGIs is today generally difficult may be an issue for national coordination but anyway to what extent can they pay the fees to EGI.eu? And for which services in a rapidly changing enviroment (e.g. from Grid to Cloud)? Involvement of new user communities has been recognized to be too slow and too small HEP is The heavy user (it owns most resources) many new user communities are building their own independent infrastructures many take advantage of EGI by opportunistic usage only availability of resources is a key point (Resource Allocation Task Force is defining the procedures and tools to manage central/distributed pool of resources  almost a proof of concept so far) no real breakthrough

The issues (II) adding new services slow and difficult grid technology does not help so much EGI is providing services defined more than ten years ago (and almost only those!) many activities around cloud technology but no production level services so far many actors involved, including public cloud suppliers federated cloud task force has done a lot of work around interoperability, but still at testbed level many competitive activities/initiatives around new services and data (within specific user communities or general e.g. EUDAT) although often there have been strong contacts with EGI there is not a clear indication of how, when (and why) these will enrich the EGI infrastructure
