Course contents The course is an introduction to translation theory and practice. It also presents analytical tools derived from text linguistics and CDA with a view to English-Italian translation. The various levels of lexis, syntax, pragmatics and discourse will be highlighted in contrastive analysis with special attention to the issue of language and gender. Various types of texts will be analysed and translated, while editing practice will also be gained through the critical appraisal of pre-existent translations.

Il percorso è volto al raggiungimento di conoscenze e competenze di vario genere: - consapevolezza della complessità dei processi di interpretazione, contestualizzazione e produzione propri della traduzione; - conoscenza dell'evoluzione del dibattito culturale sulla traduzione conoscenza delle principali teorie e approcci contemporanei padronanza dei principali strumenti di analisi linguistico-testuale da utilizzare in preparazione al processo traduttivo; - capacità di analisi critica dei testi di partenza e di arrivo, con particolare attenzione al tema del genere; - conoscenza di alcuni strumenti online; - capacità di riconoscere le tipologie testuali dei testi di partenza e utilizzare le convenzioni proprie della lingua di arrivo in funzione della tipologia testuale corrispondente o richiesta; - capacità di tradurre testi di vario genere in modo adeguato, senza errori di comprensione né di lingua italiana.

Exam Written – 2 hours 2 questions on theoretical issues (15-20 lines in English) 1 passage to translate, En-It Non-native speakers of Italian can opt for text analysis (in English) of the same passage. YOU CAN SIT THE EXAM ONLY ONCE EVERY SESSION

EXAM EVALUATION THEORY: you need to prove adequate knowledge of the topic, to be dealt with in sufficient detail. Use correct syntax, appropriate lexis and a register suitable to an academic context. TRANSLATION: Not acceptable: mistakes in Italian; wrong interpretation of ST; internal contradictions; TT inadequacy to its intended function; loss of key terms. Less serious: inadequate register; use of repetitions not present in the ST; scarcely effective lexical choices; clumsy syntax; punctuation; layout, etc.

Exam validation You must have passed your Lettorato II exam BEFORE taking Lingua inglese II. The final mark will be the average of the two. In order to take the Lingua II exam you must have completed Lingua I in all its parts.

Seminars If you attend all classes you can take the final test (a translation), which will replace the translation in the main exam. Seminar evaluations will be valid till May 2017
