R&D per ATLAS G. Darbo - INFN / Genova Frascati, 24 Novembre R&D Proposal Guidelines Criteria for evaluation formal aspects clear and precise presentation of proposal quantitative estimates of timescales and resources well defined milestones for the R&D activities scientific aspects R&D topic fits into ATLAS activity structure activity respects the various constraints etc. proposed activity fits into foreseen time schedule resources foreseen match schedule funding aspects critical mass for activity existing / expected Template for R&D proposal available at the HL web page:
R&D per ATLAS G. Darbo - INFN / Genova Frascati, 24 Novembre R&D: Template for Proposal L’High Luminosity WG ha preparato un Template per Proposte di R&D nel Framework di ATLAS: DES/ATLAS_RD_template.doc DES/ATLAS_RD_template.doc
R&D per ATLAS G. Darbo - INFN / Genova Frascati, 24 Novembre Common Activities with CMS Discuss common R&D projects once concrete proposals have been submitted or be even pro-active... candidate joint R&D topics CMOS processes (e.g μm), optical links,... Discuss timescale to implement (major) upgrade when to replace the tracking detector likely to require at least a one year shutdown relation to major machine changes (interaction region) Discuss scope and size of upgrade arrive at common point-of-view wrt machine e.g. optimization of electronic replacement costs vs. RF replacement costs
R&D per ATLAS G. Darbo - INFN / Genova Frascati, 24 Novembre PBS for R&D
Outer layer: µstrips, 2÷4 layers, 9 cm x 80 µm, 116 ÷ 327 m 2. Radiazione: pixel 1.6x10 16 n eq cm -2 ; short strips 2x10 15 n eq cm -2 ; µstrips 8x10 14 n eq cm -2.
R&D per ATLAS G. Darbo - INFN / Genova Frascati, 24 Novembre R&D for Tracker No R&D Submitted till now. R&D topics (as discussed at the ATLAS Tracker Upgrade Workshop in Genova): R&D - Pixels rad-hard sensors, 0.13 µm electronics (FE, Controller/Optolink), power scheme (serial/DC-DC converter), cooling. R&D - Short strips module concept, faster electronics, power, cooling. R&D - µstrips faster electronics, power, cooling, cost. Charge collection 3D detector (Pixel), high bias voltage (>1000 V), S/N (electronics) Material engineering n + -in-n (as for today pixel), p-type floating zone FZ (50% cheaper, need single side processing) for µstrips, High resistivity Magnetic Czochralski (MCz) silicon, epitaxial silicon (p and n-type). We are also investigating to have a Tracker Electronic Workshop of 2 days late next spring. It should be an ATLAS/CMS workshop and its aim is to boost specific and common R&D.
R&D per ATLAS G. Darbo - INFN / Genova Frascati, 24 Novembre Cost of Upgrade The High Luminosity WG is preparing a document (2 pages) with a crude estimation of the costs for Upgrade: Document will be ready in draft version by end of November. This document can be used as a first evaluation by INFN to prepare the “Road Map” Most of the cost will be the Tracker and it will also depend on the “Production Model” for Module assembly (test should be stay in the labs): Industry vs. Participant Laboratories. (this can weight 2 MSFr for Pixel only) In addition to R&D cost we have to consider NRE costs (1 set of mask for 0.13 µm technology costs 660k$ !) Cost Profile: Basic R&D: 2005÷2007 Pre-production: 2008÷2013 (15% of CORE) Production: 2011÷2015 (85% of CORE) End of next week for first Numbers !
