Improvements in the water pumps and a new role for the draught animal power when mechanically converted in electricity
According to several exteem of international organizations, there are now in the world several hundred million of workimg animals

The advantages granted by this system are several
realizzare i pozzi in forma tubolare e quindi facilmente rivestibili.
This means that, with the same amount of money, we can supply with water 100 people throught photocoltaic or 400 hundred people throught this improvement of draught animal pumps
And is useful to underline that most of the cost are in local value and not in foreign currency

Further to these appliances also a refirigeration system can be considered for vaccins
The simplicity of the system makes its maintenance easier than any other system actually used, also easier than that of photovoltaic
A life time of the equipment of 10 thousand hours is estimated
However an eventual small amount of easy changeable spare parts allows a real no limits life cycle of the equipments and a very high mean time between failures
Approximatly thirty patents have been requested in USA, China and others countries, in the last decades, for electric generators powered by animal work
According to a study presented by the University of Edinburgh, several equipment for generate electricity have been tested in different developing countries among which South Africa and India
However it is known that this specific, potentially really useful technology, has shown real difficulties for its application and diffusion, mainly for not resolved mechanical problems
In fact none of the said equipment has reached the market
While the solution here tested really solves all the mentioned problems
Now the muscular energy for the production of electric energy is utilized in several villages of developing countries but only in a very small scale
Is the case of the use of bicycle dynamo to power portable personal computers and the case of hand crank charger for radios and portable telephone sets
It is estimated that 1 billion people living in remote rural areas has available only a very small quantity of water and this water is also of very low quality
A similar number of people is not connected to the electric grid or to any other source of electric energy

A traditional well in the desert near Marsa Alam, Egypt, May
The quality of water from the traditional well
Among the leverages is possible to see a small green wood: it is the place where a diesel engine lifts the water of high quality, from a deeper well, for a turistic village
This, in a certain way, shows the need of electric energy to reach a deeper layer to obtain water of better quality
Generally speaking the employment of animals in agriculture is seasonal. Then they work for about 120 days by year (UN literature estimate)
Therefore it is available a lot of free animal working time that can be employed without compromise the health of livestock
We can remember that animals engaged in transports works all over the year
Both animals and their feed are produced in the village, so there is no cost in foreign currency for their utilisation
Then the savings in foreign value can be engaged in the purchase of pumps, seeds, pesticides, food, medicines healt appliances, telephone educational televison sets or lights
Therefore the local currency will not be utilized to purchase abroad fuel or more expensive electric generators
Then with the same foreign costs is possible to have a better water and electric service
The required manpower is represented by few minutes work for preparing the animals and a simple man watch during the working period also far from the equipment
Taking in to account that the animals are yet present in the village their purchase price is to be only partially considered
The other cost to be considered is not the complete cost of feed of the animals
In fact it should be considered only the difference between the ration of maintenance, that is the quantity of food eaten by the non working animal, and the bigger ration of work that is the quantity of food eaten by the animal in working periods
Furthermore the storage of energy is represented by the rest of the animal and not by fragile batteries
All the electric generators, today in use in remote rural areas for lifting water and other needs, have the following specific limits:
Connection to the electric grid: the cost
Wind generator: shortage of area with wind speed of more the 3 meters per second (reasonable speed necessary to generate electric energy)
Wind generator: shortage of geographical areas with continuos, constant wind and therefore a great needs of batteries for energy accumulation
Photovoltaic: cost of the plant and of the energy accumulation
Photovoltaic: It is extimated that a photovoltaic system is several times more expensive in comparison with a draught animal powered generator
Photovoltaic: It is very difficult to move a photovoltaic system from one place to an other
Photovoltaic: All the components are produced outside the remote villages
Fuel engine (diesel, gasoline): foreign currency cost, difficulty in fuel and spare parts supply, maintenance problems, reliability and life time of the engine
Biogas: foreign currency cost of the engine, maintenance and spare parts supply problems
Biogas: to produce enough gas for an electric generator engine for an household it is estimated that it should be available the biological substance of at least a family and five big oxen
Small water turbines: cost, maintenance shortage of places with rivers with sufficient flood power
THE ROLE OF ANIMAL POWER TODAY
A research recently published by the University of Edinburgh represents these intereasting data on the use of animals in agriculture works
“According to an estimate about 250 million working animals provide the draught power to approximately 28% of the world’s arable land, equivalent to 52% of total cropping land in developing countries”
“The draught animals are mainly kept for: ploughing the agriculture land hauling carts
pulling agricultural implements running certain other devices such as Persian wheels [mechanical pumps], sugar cane and seed crusher etc.
use as pack animal (to carry load on their backs)
handling dragging and stacking timber logs in the forests
mobile grocery shops (selling goods on animal driven carts) as sports animals”
Dakar, Senegal International Agriculutre Fair, April
Their use – due to the different needs during the seasons – is partial
In fact, generally speaking, in agriculutre, animal are used for one hundred – one hundred and twenty days per year
Then, there is available a large amount of energy that could be employed without compromising the health and welfare of animals
Further, there is recent memory of international request for proposal, issued by governmental organization, for the supply of thousands of ploughs hauled by animals
There are several organization networks, universities and magazines engaged in the training and development of draught animal power in developing countries
While one of these is based in USA and operates in conjunction with an University
In several situation in Europe the use of animal work is considered the only possible solution
It is the case of dragging logs in the wood and of the precision plough in horticulture
A real experience in the use of animal power
The people engaged in the project has not lost their memory of the traditional technologies, employed in their farm until 60ies
Among these technologies there are the use of animal power for transport, ploughing, water lifting and olive seed crushing
The ploughs used by Masseria Coppola until '60ties are now shown in the Museum of Rural Heritage of Masseria Lupoli in Crispiano TA, I

I primi risalgono agli anni ‘80.
The spare elctrical energy produced with the systems can be utilized for other needs such as dispensaries lighting, schools and vocational centers lighting and telecomunications
