A lot of interesting reasons have motivated our choice The city Square has always been at the heart of public urban life. The Square is the privileged place where culture and history merge. The Square is a meaningful symbol of the way of living of a society and of its typical features. The Square can promote civic values and commercial competitiveness. The Square can bring people together for a more positive, shared experience of urban living.

People have to be aware of the complexity and variety of the society they are a part of, they have to appreciate notions of civic identity and respect for others, so there must be a place where they can meet and share their emotions. This is one of the key functions of the city square.

FIRST OF ALL… Students are involved into a brainstorming activity in order to arouse motivation and elicit their interest. The teacher asks them the following questions: Is there a square in your village/town? How often do you go there? What do you usually do in the square? Do you know what «agorà» means?

Students Answers My ideal square should be big with a church, a place where we can play together. My ideal square is a meeting place for all the kids. The square should be a place where you can meet your friends; a place where you can relax or go for a walk. There should be benches, trees, a playground for children and pubs.

Which are the fundamental elements of your ideal city? The presence of places where people can meet, like squares, where people can do something together…

And now… Students are shown the pictures of the most famous squares in the world. Then they are invited to make a survey about the square they like most. This activity is developed by dividing the class into 3 small groups. At the end, the students have to gather information, discuss the new findings and motivate their choice…

Famous City Squares around the World Almost every city has some sort of square, serving an important purpose as a social and commercial meeting place. They are usually surrounded by shops, restaurants, and a city hall. At their centre there is often a fountain, a monument, or a statue. But besides these similarities, town squares also have their own unique history.

The concept of the public space has drawn an important inspiration from the notions of the Greek agorà and the Roman forum, taken as ideal models of public arenas where the public affairs of the city are discussed among citizens.

Trafalgar Square is a large city square commemorating Lord Horatio Nelsons victory against Napoleons navy at the Battle of Trafalgar in The central monument within the square is a single tall column on which the figure of Nelson stands gazing over London. His monument is surrounded by four colossal lions and a series of large fountains. Much more than just an open plaza, Trafalgar Square is one of the most famous city squares in the United Kingdom and has become a social and political location for visitors and Londoners alike. The Old Market Square is an open, city square in Nottingham, England. The Eastern end of the square is dominated by the Council House, which serves as Nottingham's city hall. The nature of the square means it is often used for large local events, fairs, concerts and exhibitions.city squareNottingham EnglandCouncil House city hall

Bon Jovis lyric set in the wonderful Trevi square It's hard for me to say the things I want to say sometimes There's no one here but you and me And that broken old street light Lock the doors We'll leave the world outside All I've got to give to you Are these five words when I Thank you for loving me For being my eyes When I couldn't see For parting my lips When I couldn't breathe Thank you for loving me Thank you for loving me I never knew I had a dream Until that dream was you When I look into your eyes The sky's a different blue Cross my heart I wear no disguise If I tried, you'd make believe That you believed my lies Thank you for loving me … You pick me up when I fall down You ring the bell before they count me out If I was drowning you would part the sea And risk your own life to rescue me Lock the doors We'll leave the world outside All I've got to give to you Are these five words when I Thank you for loving me… When I couldn't fly Oh, you gave me wings You parted my lips When I couldn't breathe Thank you for loving me

But can a song be compared to poem? Good lyrics have a similar effect to poetry in their formal techniques. Many songs also employ metaphor and imagery: Led Zeppelin's famous song "Stairway to Heaven" describes a woman who is "...buying a stairway to heaven. Recently a band, "The Waterboys", released an album called "An Appointment with Mr Yeats", in which fourteen of Yeats's poems are set to music. The result is utter brilliance. The natural cadences and rhythms of the poems are used to create musical melodies.

Come live with me and be my Love, And we will all the pleasures prove 1 That hills and valleys, dale and field, And all the craggy mountains yield.prove There will we sit upon the rocks And see the shepherds feed their flocks, By shallow rivers, to whose falls Melodious birds sing madrigals. 2madrigals There will I make thee beds of roses And a thousand fragrant posies, A cap of flowers, and a kirtle 3 Embroider'd all with leaves of myrtle. 4kirtlemyrtle A gown made of the finest wool Which from our pretty lambs we pull, Fair linèd slippers for the cold, With buckles of the purest gold. A belt of straw and ivy buds With coral 5 clasps and amber 6 studs: And if these pleasures may thee move, Come live with me and be my Love coralamber Thy silver dishes for thy meat As precious as the gods do eat, Shall on an ivory table be Prepared each day for thee and me. The shepherd swains 7 shall dance and sing For thy delight each May-morning: If these delights thy mind may move, Then live with me and be my Love.swains Notes 1...prove: test, try out 2...madrigals: poems set to music and sung by two to six voices with.....a single melody or interweaving melodies 3...kirtle: dress or skirt 4...myrtle: shrub with evergreen leaves, white or pink flowers, and dark berries. In Greek mythology, a symbol of love. 5...coral: yellowish red; 6...amber: yellow or brownish yellow 7...swains: country youths.

Live with me, and be my love, And we will all the pleasures prove By hills and valleys, dales and fields, And all the pleasant pastures yields. There will we sit upon the rocks, And see the shepherds feed their flocks, By shallow rivers, by whose falls Melodious birds sing madrigals. There will I make thee a bed of roses, With a thousand fragrant posies. By shallow waters, by whose falls Melodious birds sing madrigals.

Did You Know…?

No man is an island. Thats what the English poet John Donne said 500 years ago. He meant that people by nature belong together.
