1 June 2004XIX Edition - Guido Chincarini WELCOME TO EVERYBODY Area Milanese – Universities & Institutes Astronomical gathering of Students & Teachers & Researchers & Staff A Day to stay together Some Science, Some concerns, Some Joy Thanks and The future With the collaboration of Mrs. R. Millul Students – Post – Doc and a few colleagues

2 June 2004XIX Edition - Guido Chincarini Why As I mentioned in somewhat more details sometime ago in a note I e_mailed to every body, the goal was to have a day a year during which students, teachers, researchers and technical and administrative personnel could stay together in a relaxed atmosphere. Nothing new. This happens in other Countries and in the Universities and Institutes of which I was part. I started this initiative 19 years ago as a teacher inviting during the first years also some of the representative persons of the Institutions in Milano to make better known our activity. It became clear in time, however, that the students should have always more space and that not only the gathering should have a rather informal structure but that we should do our best to make the day completely free from highly formal presentation (and representation) and avoid to turn into a façade forgetting the real reasons why we started it: honest and sincere togetherness. Did we succeed? Is that possible? Last year we had one of the most beautiful days ever. It became clear this year furthermore, due to the many changes we had in the organization of the program of the Italian Universities and related problems, that this would be a good place where students could openly, informally and sincerely (and with the few hearing say data at hand) speak out about the grave problems they encountered during these years. That is, as I mentioned in my e_mail: Tell us how to help you to better carry out our duties Do we really work for you? is the question I am asking to myself and how hard do we try. It may help to know more in an open way and in a way that is sincere and constructive because too often the real problems and the real needs that we should serve are masked either by blindness or by healthy interests or by ignorance (?) or …..

3 June 2004XIX Edition - Guido Chincarini Where do we go from here? We should keep it the way it is improving activity and togetherness but never transforming it in a formal set of presentations, or in a grand buffet or in a façade where the representations (either personal or Institutional) become more important than the contents. We should probably try to keep gathering in Merate simply because we now have a nice park (since 1986) at the Observatory. It would also be nice to keep a tradition in a place with a beautiful park. We generally felt comfortable here. On the other hand we could use of other facilities if needed and perhaps due. The University of Bicocca and the University of Milano could work on it …. Etc. But again I would prefer to continue to use of the spaces we have here. We will see, TBD. On top of the prizes we will give for volleyball and Ping pong with next year we will try – it is always a matter of funds and bureaucracy - to set up a price (procedures will be discussed within the Universities and must be only by merit) for the best student of the year. I will do my best to do it and however my best may not be enough, Finally I would like to go back to an other old tradition. In the early days we would take a picture of the participant and Mr Cantu` was the photographer. I will now carry out that task as well so that I appreciate if just after the end of the morning session we will gather in front of the Zeiss Telescope for the picture. We will take two so that I also will be in one.
