reliability, stability and safety RICH Commissioning The first priority now is to be ready for collisions Effort to insure better: reliability, stability and safety Important progress in: HV stability L0 and L1 error monitoring and propagation Cooling plant stability and monitoring A few more software coded reactions to alerts and alarms Timing controls System routinely on HV (-18 kV) and Si bias on HPDs
RICH running In RICH, we have opted for piquets rather than shifters. “On call Piquet” has been organized and running for ~ a month (Tito in charge). Now two days, two persons. Towards a week piquet for running time. Training course are held for “will be” piquets. Piquet people requested to be present at the morning briefing.
RICH Calibration and Software Alignment and calibration strategy and studies are progressing well. RICH PID calibration with D* already mature. Calibrate RICH PID using pions and kaons from D* decays selected using kinematics only. Samples need to selected in bins of P and Pt. PID efficiency, mis-ID and DLL for a specific physics channel must be weighted for the relevant P and Pt distributions (using as base the D* decays). New study to use L->pp also for PID calibration.
Status of the HPDs 16 settembre 2008 CSN1-Pisa
HPDs vacuum issue 42 HPDs (41 in RICH2 and 1 in RICH1) have experienced or are experiencing vacuum problems (out of the 484 installed in the RICH). 20 HPDs have been replaced. Studies are going on to understand the origin of this behaviour. agreed on a deadline for investigations (January 2009). Photonis have re-processed two tubes, sent 1 at CERN and 1 in Edinburough. Negotiations are underway with Photonis for replacement tubes. All these HPDs installed in the RICHes, are still functional, however with an increased noise level.
RICH1&2: IFB vs. tube age combined update for RICH1&2 4 supports the hope/expectation that RICH 1 IFBs generally develop on a lower gradient New quartz Limit of glow discharge 4 RICH meeting, 01.09.2008
Overall RICH2 IFB Development Boundary between noisy and stable continues to move as before Mention Quartz theory
Example HPDs’ IFB Timeline RICH2: IFB – example data Example HPDs’ IFB Timeline Glow Discharge Good HPD NB: much lower y-scale Age = TestDate – PArrDate where PArrDate = Date HPD arrived at PDTF
Linear IFB Projection into 10th year Definition of ‘glow discharge’ ~30 HPDs in Overflow 100 HPDs will have >4% projected IFB after 10 years

We have been thriving to see the first rings in our RICHes, … and these will come only with the beams. Meanwhile, the only rings we have been able to produce… Single photon accumulated image taken shining from a projector (the same used for the magn. distortion) on the C-side of RICH2. The light level over the whole surface is ~100 p.e. per event.
