The AMS detector measures cosmic rays with accuracy: 1- The coordinates: to 10 microns 2- The travel time: 150 ps 3- The velocity: to an accuracy of 1 in 1000 Particle identification : 1/10 10 The AMS detector

AMS Event Display of ground level cosmic ray – top view Cherenkov ring reconstructed in RICH The expected data rate from AMS is 15 terabytes per year, more information than is contained in the entire printed collection of the US Library of Congress.

To use the bending power of the magnet, we have built a state of the art Tracking Detector based on 8 thin layers of Silicon Detectors, with a spatial accuracy better than 10 micron THE AMS SILICON TRACKER TOF ECAL RICH TOF Tracker Super- conducting Magnet Coils AMS Cryocooler He Vessel TRD

TOF pre-integration UTOF In December 2007 Upper TOF has been integrated on AMS

TOF pre-integration LTOF In March 2008 Lower TOF has been integrated on AMS

Upper TOF integration on AMS Plane 1 side P and plane 2 side N are read out. RAM radiator Plane 1 side P Plane 2 side N S1 QM

Upper TOF integration on AMS PMTs on UTOF plane 1 side P and plane 2 side N connected to QM S1-crate through flight cables and powered by SHV1-Brick. Since beginning of March 2008 the EM-Scrate has been replaced by a QM-Scrate.

PMTs on LTOF plane 3 and 4 side N plane connected to EM S-Crate and powered by FM SHV-Brick. The lower tracker cooling circuit are blocking the cabling access to the LTOF panel of the plane 3 side p reworking still in progress. Lower TOF: April 2008

TOF & ACC settings Since December 07 detector procedures and settings have been improved and debugged. In parallel with data acquisition an intense debug activity on the DAQ system and on Run Control is started in order to fix some problems: trigger rate, dead time, CRC error, de-synchronization error, SFECs readout, Graphical interface used to set up TOF electronics and detector: SDR2 controller - switch on the FE boards. - enable SFECs read out. HV Brick controller - set all DC/DC to HV value. - set all Linear regulator to HV value. SPT2 Pro controller - verify scaler values are consistent. - set the output signals to JLV1. SFET2 & SFEA2 controller - TDC configuration. - set low, high and S-high thresholds TOF configuration procedures were too long and complicated. A standard and automatic procedure has been implemented and since May it's in use.

HV-Brick Vibration test and characterizations All 5 HV-Bricks (4FM+1FS) has been characterized in Bologna INFN laboratories, vibrated at the Galileo Avionica (Firenze) and tested again at CERN (March 2008). Asse Z Asse XAsse Y 03/03/2008

TVT on flight S-Crate and SHV Brick In May 14 th -24 th thermal vacuum tests on 3 flight S-crates and 3 flight SHV- brick has been successfully performed at the SERMS laboratory. In July 20 th - 30 th after AMS de-integration, the thermal vacuum tests on 2 flight S-crates and 2 flight SHV-brick has been successfully performed.

The issues of antimatter in the universe and the origin of Dark Matter probe the foundations of modern physics. AMS AMS is the only large scientific experiment to study these issues directly in space. AMS is a unique experiment on the $100 billion ISS. The Cosmos is the Ultimate Laboratory. Cosmic rays can be observed at energies higher than any accelerator.
