Like so many aspects of the System i, these features have been with us since the 1970s, and the importance of these features only continue to increase in value. When the predecessor systems were designed in the 1970s, they implemented a storage architecture known as Single Level storage. In this scheme, there is only one large address space. There are no user buffer pools, no tablespaces, no volume groups. In order to implement the storage as a single address space, the System i must manage the storage on behalf of all applications and users. That is, applications never allocate address space or define the size of a file that they later have to extend. Now, as the world moves toward virtualization of all hardware resources, we see storage technologies of all kinds moving toward this same level of automation.

The "BASE" product consists of the reporting server, the web based authoring tools - and is a REAL LICENSE that allows the customer ownership of this code, however, its a somewhat limited use version of the product because it only includes only a small number of licenses (based on processor tier). And it doesn't include all the features we've put into Standard Edition. But the VALUE they get on this upgrade ranges from $1600 to $48,000. I haven't been keeping track anymore since I switched jobs, but last I checked we had over 40,000 orders of the BASE product and about a 23% update on Software Maintenance on those 40,000 licenses (or over 9000 SWMA contracts on DB2 Web Query).
