4 C’erano una volta un re e una regina che volevano avere dei figli, ma non riuscivano ad averne. Tanto lo desideravano che la regina si sarebbe accontentata anche di una mela. Once upon a time there were a king and a queen who wanted to have children, but they weren’t able to. They wished so much that the queen would be happy even if she had an apple.

5 E fu così che invece di un figlio le nacque una mela. Mela era bella e colorata come non se n’erano mai viste. Il re la mise in un vassoio d’oro sul suo terrazzo. So, instead of a child, an apple born. Apple was so beautiful and colourful as no one had ever seen. The king put her in a gold tray on the balcony.

6 Un giorno, un altro re che abitava di fronte, vide una bellissima ragazza che si lavava, si pettinava e poi rientrava nella mela. One day, another king who lived opposite, saw a beautiful girl who was washing, combing and then came back in the apple.

7 Il re rimase così colpito dalla bellezza di Mela che pensò di andare a chiedere ai suoi “reali” vicini se gliela regalavano. La regina non voleva dargliela perché era la sua figliola, ma alla fine, vista l’insistenza del re, cedette. The king was so impressed by the beauty of Apple that he went to ask to his neighbours if they gave her to him. The queen didn’t want to give her because she was her daughter, but in the end, she agree because of the insistence of the young king.

8 Il re portò Mela nel suo castello e la sistemò in camera sua su un vassoio d’oro. Ogni sera Mela usciva, si lavava, si pettinava e poi rientrava nella mela. Non mangiava e non parlava. The king brought Apple in his castle and put her on a golden tray in his bedroom. Apple went out every night, washed, combed and then came back in the apple. She didn’t eat and she didn’t speak.

9 Il re viveva con una matrigna sospettosa e curiosa che voleva tanto sapere cosa faceva suo figlio chiuso sempre in camera. Un giorno il figlio-re dovette partire per una guerra e allora disse al suo servitore più fedele di preparare sempre acqua e pettine per la ragazza della mela. Gli raccomandò di mettere al sicuro la chiave della sua camera e di non aprire la porta a nessuno, a costo della sua vita. The king was living with a suspicious and curious stepmother who wanted to know what he was doing always closed in the bedroom. One day the young king had to leave for a war, so he told his most trusted servant to prepare always water and a comb for the girl in the apple. The king advised the servant to secure the key of the bedroom and don’t open the door to anyone, at the cost of his life.

10 Un giorno, la matrigna curiosa mise del sonnifero nel vino del servitore e appena lui si fu addormentato s’impossessò della chiave della camera del re. One day, the curious stepmother put a sleeping pill in the wine and, as soon as the servant was asleep, she took the king's room key.

11 La matrigna aprì la porta di camera, entrò e cominciò a frugare dappertutto. Però, più cercava, meno trovava l’oggetto dell’ossessione del re. Poi vide la mela sul vassoio d’oro e pensò che solo quella poteva essere la cosa che al re piaceva. The stepmother opened her bedroom door, entered and began to search everywhere. But she couldn’t find the object of the obsession of the king. Then she saw the golden apple on the tray and thought that it could be the thing that the king liked so much.

12 Siccome la regina portava sempre uno stiletto alla cintura, lo prese e provò a trafiggere la mela, da ogni fessura uscì un rivolo di sangue. Impaurita la matrigna scappò, richiuse la camera e rimise la chiave in tasca al servitore. As the queen has always a dagger in her belt, she took it and tried to pierce the apple, so a trickle of blood came out from every crevice. The stepmother escaped scared, locked the room and put the key in the servant’s pocket.

13 Quando il servitore si svegliò non sapeva cosa gli fosse successo, così corse nella camera del re e la trovò allagata di sangue. Impaurito scappò e andò a chiedere aiuto alla sua zia che era una fata. When the servant awoke, he didn’t know what had happened, so he ran in the king's bedroom and found it flooded with blood. Scared, he escaped and went to ask for help to his aunt who was a fairy.

14 La zia fata prese alcune polverine adatte alle mele incantate e alle ragazze stregate e le mescolò, poi le diede al servitore. Il servitore tornò a casa di corsa, andò in camera del re e mise la polverina dentro ogni trafittura. La mela si spaccò e uscì fuori una bellissima ragazza tutta incerottata. The aunt fairy took some magic dusts suitable for enchanted apples and bewitched girls and mixed them, then gave the dust to the servant.

15 Tornò il re e la ragazza della mela gli raccontò che la matrigna l’aveva pugnalata, ma che il suo servitore l’aveva salvata e che, se lui voleva, sarebbe diventata sua sposa. The king returned and the girl told him that his stepmother had stabbed the apple, but that his servant had saved her. She told also that if he wanted, she would become his wife.

16 Il re rispose: “Perbacco, se ti voglio!”. La matrigna scappò e di lei non si seppe più nulla. The king replied: "Gosh, for sure I want!" The stepmother ran away and anybody never heard anything about her again.

18 Geppone era un povero contadino a cui il vento aveva distrutto i raccolti. Geppone was a poor farmer and the North wind had destroyed his crops.

19 Geppone lavorava i campi di proprietà del priore, ma, non riuscendo a vivere per colpa del vento che distruggeva i suoi raccolti, decise di andare a parlare con il vento Tramontano. Geppone worked the priest’s fields, but, unable to live because of the wind that destroyed his crops, he decided to go and talk to the North wind.

20 Arrivato alla casa del vento Tramontano, bussò alla porta e la moglie del vento lo fece entrare per aspettare che tornasse suo marito. Quando Tramontano tornò, Geppone gli disse: "Siccome mi hai rovinato tutti i raccolti, io e la mia famiglia patiamo la fame, in qualche modo devi rimediare!". Il vento, preso dalla carità del cuore, gli diede una scatola e gli disse: "Questa non darla a nessuno, quando hai fame chiedile quello che vuoi e lei te lo darà.“ Geppone arrived at the North wind’s house, he knocked on the door and the wind’s wife let him come back to wait for her husband. When the wind returned, Geppone said him: "Since you have ruined all my crops, my family and me are suffering the greatest hunger, so you have to remedy somehow.“ The wind, moved by the charity of heart, gave him a box and said: "Don’t give it to anyone, use it when you are hungry. Ask the box what you want and it will give it to you."

21 Geppone uscì dal castello del vento per ritornare a casa dalla sua famiglia ma nel bosco si fermò perché aveva molta fame. Allora aprì la scatola e le ordinò pane, vino e companatico. La scatola obbedì e Geppone mangiò in abbondanza, poi proseguì il viaggio verso casa. Geppone came out from the wind’s castle to return home to his family, but in the woods he stopped because he was very hungry. Then he opened the box and ordered it to give bread, wine and pottage. The box did so, and Geppone ate in abundance, then he continued his journey towards his home.

22 Arrivato a casa anche la sua famiglia, che aveva fame, gli chiese di provvedere e Geppone ordinò alla scatola cibo per tutti. La scatola obbedì... When Geppone arrived at home, his family was hungry and asked him to arrange something. Geppone ordered food for everyone to the box. The box did so...

23 Nonostante il vento avesse raccomandato a Geppone di non rivelare il segreto della scatola e di non darla a nessuno, sua moglie ne parlò con il priore che chiamò subito Geppone e lo costrinse a regalargliela in cambio di qualche sacco di sementi Although the wind had recommended Geppone not reveal the secret of the box and not give it to anyone, the farmer ’ s wife spoke to the priest, who called immediately Geppone and forced him to give the box exchanging it for a bag of seeds

24 Le sementi dati dal Priore finirono presto. Geppone decise di tornare dal vento Tramontano a chiedere aiuto. Questa volta il vento non voleva dargli nulla, poi, mosso dalla carit à del cuore, gli diede una scatola tutta d'oro da utilizzare solo quando avesse avuto tanta, tanta fame. The seeds received from the priest ended soon, so Geppone decided to return to the wind, asking for help. This time the wind wouldn ’ t give him anything, then, moved by love of the heart, gave him a golden box to use only when he was very very hungry.

25 Sulla via del ritorno, gli venne fame e chiese alla scatola di fornirgli del cibo. L'apr ì, ma, invece del cibo, usc ì un omaccione armato di bastone che lo fece "nero" dalle botte. On the back way, the farmer was hungry and he asked food to the box. He opened it, but instead of food, a big man armed with a stick went out from the box and beat the farmer very hard.

26 Geppone zoppicando arrivò a casa dalla sua famiglia che subito gli chiese il dono del vento. Geppone riapr ì la scatola e questa volta uscirono due omaccioni armati di bastoni! Gi ù botte da orbi sulla moglie e i figli fino a quando Geppone richiuse la scatola e ebbe un'idea. Disse alla moglie: “ Adesso va ’ dal priore e digli che ho portato una scatola ancora pi ù bella! ” Limping, Geppone came at home to his family who immediately asked him the gift of the wind. Geppone opened the box and this time two big men with sticks came out! They beat very hard the wife and the sons until Geppone closed the box and had an idea. He told his wife: "Now go to the priest and tell him that I brought a box even more beautiful!"

27 Appena saputa la notizia, il priore chiamò Geppone e lo convinse a dargli scatola d'oro in cambio della vecchia scatola e di qualcosa di giunta. Geppone raccomandò al prete di utilizzare la scatola solo quando avesse avuto molta, molta fame. Just heard the news, the priest called Geppone and convinced him to give him the golden box in exchange for the old box. The farmer advised the priest to use the box only when he were very, very hungry.

28 Il priore fu molto contento dello scambio, perch é il giorno dopo avrebbe avuto alcuni preti e il vescovo come ospiti a pranzo e avrebbe fatto bella figura. Fu cos ì che il giorno dopo, appena ebbero detto messa, i preti si ritrovano in cucina, ma non trovarono cibo pronto o sul fuoco e si preoccuparono. Il priore, dopo aver fatto venire una gran fame a tutti, li fece sedere intorno al tavolo dove sopra c ’ era solo la scatola d'oro. L ’ apr ì e questa volta uscirono ben sei omaccioni armati di bastoni e giù botte da orbi! The priest was really happy for the exchange, because the day after he had some priests and the bishop as guest for lunch. So the next day, when they had said Mass, the priests went in the kitchen, but they didn’t find ready food or cooking food. The priest, when everyone was very hungry, invite his colleagues and the bishop to sit around the table where there was only the golden box. He opened it and this time six big men armed with sticks came out and they beat very hard the bishops and all the priests!

29 La scatola cadde dal tavolo e rimase aperta, così gli omaccioni continuarono a picchiare. Geppone si godeva la scena di nascosto e, quando decise che ne avevano prese abbastanza, chiuse la scatola. Fu questo il loro bel desinare. Allora Geppone riprese le sue scatole e non le prestò pi ù a nessuno. E visse come un signore il resto della sua vita. The box felt down from the table and remained open, so the big men continued to beat. Geppone enjoyed the scene in secret, and when he decided that it was enough, he closed the box. So this was the nice dinner for the priests. Then Geppone resumed his boxes and didn ’ t give them nomore to anyone. So he lived like a rich gentleman for all his life long.
