2 Innovazione Crescita Nuove tecnologie … parole sfidanti …
C’è solo una cosa che non possiamo fare, ignorare il cambiamento ed andare avanti come abbiamo sempre fatto. Ma attenzione, cambiare può essere rischioso, ma forse non cambiare può esserlo ancora di più.

Data Centres are large buildings, fitted out specifically for the running of IT equipment. All COLT data centres are purpose built, customer accessible locations designed for providing high availability services, fully integrated with COLT’s fibre network. They are typically located in discrete locations and their addresses are unpublished for security reasons. Key features (summary) COLT data centres are staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and COLT technical staff manage and monitor customer servers and applications from a Network Operation Centre (NOC). A combination of access cards and CCTV security cameras ensure that only authorised customers and staff have access and provide 24x7 physical and logical security. Fully resilient air conditioning means the computer room temperature and humidity is precisely controlled allowing optimal equipment performance. VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus) is used to detect smoke in its incipient stage by detecting chemical changes in the air. Computer-friendly Argonite fire suppression systems are used in the unlikely event of a fire. All customer and provider supplied equipment are housed within standard rack space. Customers requiring dedicated areas are provided with rack space located within a secured area. All racks have fault tolerant power supplies. Key features (long): Physical building – warehouse sized building, providing maximum internal space for equipment. Within this space, it is common that around 50-70% of space is available for sale to deliver customer services, depending on the Data Centre layout and original build specification. Power supply – very high levels of power supply are required, typically delivered over two separate feeds directly from a substation in case of failure. Typical power supplies to Data Centres are measured in MVA (Millions of VoltAmps (or Millions of Watts), making them amongst some of the largest consumers of power – a typical Data Centre can consume as much electricity as 5000 families. Power consumption now accounts for around 30-40% of the running costs of a Data Centre. In addition to the power being provided from two separate ‘feeds’, it must also be protected against variations in quality and failure to ensure that the valuable IT equipment within the Data Centre is kept live. This is carried out by Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) which smooth out variations in power supply and also keep systems powered during power outages from the main supply. There are various technologies used to achieve this – Battery systems, Rotary systems, Diesel Generators and other more exotic technologies. Air conditioning – IT equipment generates a considerable amount of heat which must be removed to allow the equipment to operate efficiently. Carefully designed air conditioning systems are used to manage heat and humidity levels. For each unit of power consumed by the equipment, another 30-50% of power is consumed removing that heat. These systems are built to allow for component failure without affecting the cooling capacity delivered into the Data Centre. Racks – Metal frameworks for IT equipment to be fitted into providing a structured location for storage and operation. Racks come in a number of standards for width (mm), depth (mm) and height (U). Note that height is measured in ‘Rack Units or ‘U’), IT equipment is also measured in. Each rack occupies around 2m2 of the Data Centre floor space, is 47U high and is secured with door locks. Racks are laid out in rows within the Data Centre, side to side with doors front & back. Some customers demand additional security beyond that normally supplied, in which case a Cage is offered. The Cage is a metal mesh fence which surrounds the customer racks. Customers are typically charged extra for this service as it occupies additional valuable floor space within the Data Centre. Bandwidth – High speed connectivity to the Internet and also to private networks to allow customers access to their data and services. COLT offers a number of options to customers depending on their need. Customers are also able to take bandwidth from an alternative supplier (typically the national incumbent) if required. The Data Centre is connected to each network twice, typically through opposite ends of the building, providing redundant connectivity in case of failure. Operational staff – To maintain, install, manage and secure the IT equipment within the Data Centre – also available to provide customers with “remote hands and eyes” Security – All COLT Data Centres are secure both physically and logically. Physical security encompasses on-site security guards, CCTV, pass card access limiting customers to common areas. Logical security covers network and IT security managed by COLT’s Security Operations Centre, supplied as an additional service to COLT Managed Services customers. Fire suppression & detection – Each Data Centre is fitted with detection and control systems to deal with the potential risk of fire. Typically the fire detection system is highly advanced, using technologies such as VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus) to alert the Data Centre management team to the risk of fire. Fire control is normally based on an inert gas system which smothers the fire. COLT does not currently use water based sprinkler systems on data floors. Network Management Centre – A centrally located function to operate all IT equipment across all Data Centre locations. Will monitor the equipment, diagnose issues etc on a 24x7 basis measured against strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs). 24x7 Sicurezza Fisica/ Logica Accessi Controllati Sistema Anti-incendio

Es.: applicazione Instant Messaging del cliente con il servizio VoIP di COLT. IMS is often talked about as the solution for Fixed Mobile convergence i.e Voice over WiFI It is much much more than that. IMS has a Service Broker capability where one application can pull information for another For example, the customer could have there own Presence server and the telco service such as IP Centrex would access that presence rather than duplicate it. Application interface will be open, so application will come from 100s of small Independent software vendors rather than from the bigger telco supplier. This will enable innovation applications Access will be over fixed and wireless service depending whetheryou are at your desk or on the move The network will know where you are.
