2 Lazio Regional and national capital: Rome (Roma) Provinces: Frosinone, Latina, Rieti, Rome, Viterbo Lazio ranks ninth among the regions in size (17,203 square km) and 3rd in population (5,102,000). Vineyards cover 65,600 hectares of which registered DOC plots total 17,400 hectares. Annual wine production of 5,000,000 hectolitres includes 11 per cent or 535,000 hectolitres DOC of which about 95 per cent is white.

4 The wines  Grape growing and wine making were well known to the Romans who produced excellent wines since Imperial times. The whites are the predominant variety — out of 25 DOC wines produced in the region, 20 are white.  Legendary whites from the heart of Italy. Lazio encompasses the great city of Rome, which has had wine in its veins since the Romans first tamed the grape. The most important varieties in the region are Malvasia and Trebbiano.
